Out of interest who is a musician on the site? I am, I play Trumpet in a big-band etc and played brass instruments all my life, not very cool I know (should have learnt guitar but did as I was told at 6!). I always thought it was a weird mix of the two, who else plays and what instrument?
Pill748, as I think you know I am a violinist. I also play bass guitar. I used to arrive at gigs in the 90s with leathers over my DJ and a violin case strapped to the back of an 851. Bit incongruous. Nothing wrong with trumpet by the way. Great instrument. You can do Pop Jazz, Blues and Classical with it.
I play guitar badly but I wouldnt call myself a musician by any stretch of anyones imagination. Nought wrong with a trumpet.
I am not that bothered whether it's 'cool' or not, I have just always found it more difficult in terms of when I was at school because people played Guitar and Drums etc and there wasn't a brass/strings group at all. I can hold my own though, I love all the old rat pack stuff and we do loads of gigs with the band I play with, so keeps me busy when I can't be out on the bike.
Not played for years but in my youth I played cornet and progressed to soprano cornet in my local brass band, my farther was the conductor, my sister played cornet and my brother played tenner horn. Don't think my lip would last 2 minutes nowa days. Steve
I wasn't keen on brass as a kid, but now, as a big reggae and soul fan, i am hugely in favour. That's what you should be playing, those minimalist repetitive horn lines: Mighty Diamonds - Sweet Lady - (Planet Earth) - YouTube
Was in the school swing band when younger, played Glenn miller and showtunes on the trumpet. Then played drums for years in various bands but nowadays confined to my converted garage/ studio. (still enjoy it though)
Ouch! I too did 4 years on Soprano, dark dark years!! You have to be born to play one of those things well; that or practise 3 hours a day!!
My ambition and dedication is grossly outweighed by my lack of talent and skill. Plus Ive only really got 3 fingers on my fretting hand. The pinky is no good as its been fused. I envy guitarists. Ive still got 2 very nice geeetars tho..
I used to play the Trumpet until I heard a Flugelhorn which I then bought and played but always wanted an e flat Trumpet which is the V12 of brass instruments.I also play a very nice 5 string fretless and a bit of guitar too.
