Why have I got a phobia about track spares from hong kong or china?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by comesunt, Mar 25, 2014.

  1. A day at a wet Donninton; and the standard footpegs on the 848 have to go... More slippery than a bag of slippery things... Now looking for alternatives but not too expensive as I'll want a spare set too...

Loads for sale on eThief from Hong Kong and china, but gut reaction is to avoid. Very keen to learn from others' experiences; either good or bad...

    Cheers,

  2. Ah. That old chestnut again.

You will get 50% of people telling you that stuff from China is perfectly fine, and the other 50% saying don't endanger your feet with stuff that has no provenance. No one will be able to give you a specific instance of a Chinese foot peg snapping in normal use, so you're back to square one.

Personally, I'd risk it for a foot peg, not for a brake lever. But that is totally subjective.

  3. in the 60's and 70's all the cheap plastic toys were made in China. All the useless little placci gimics inside the Christmas crackers were made in China too - and they broke before you got to the Christmas pudding....before granddad would fall asleep in front of the fire....lets call a spade a spade - don't they still specialise in inferior quality copies? I certainly wouldn't buy a piece of anything for my Ducati from China. If you want quality, you have to be prepared to pay for it

  4. Your iPhone is made in China.

  5. I bet they made the device you are contributing to this forum on.

  6. that's why it keeps stop.p i...................

  7. It depends on the possible downside: if failure of the part could catastrophic then I wouldn't risk it, but otherwise there's no reason not to... Ducati's own parts aren't always of the very highest quality after all?! ;)

  8. Hahaha! foisted by my own petard I feel....

  10. My recent chinese purchases. Cant fault the quality, I think they have upped the game even more so in the last couple of years. I have also found that some are using UK agents, I have bught no bike related things from China and have found the customer service to be brilliant.
We are taking proper billet alloy parts, I use the stuff and am yet to hear of or read any catastrophic failures.

This has been discussed to death.

  11. Ask Aston Martin's management and see what they say - recent snapped brake peddle re call - made in China. They cut corners on materials, and when specified to use specific grades they use forgeries - fact, in every manufacturing site our engineers have visited dealing with OEM Automotive customers this has been the case. So what is a small back street low volume parts manufacturer going to do?

  12. Agreed, levers and pegs are OK, I wouldn't buy a brake master cylinder from China though. The Brembo copies I have seen have been diabolic.

  13. Very true. Personally, if you have any doubts, no matter how small, I wouldn't buy. There are plenty of alternatives, especially in the footpeg department.

The old mantra 'you get what you pay for' seems appropriate at this point

  14. Just bought some replacement foot pegs off eThief from HK. Direct swap for the existing peg( but a bit of grip), not full rear-sets. I'll let you know what I think once they turn up...

  15. I suppose you pays yer money blah, blah. There will be dodgy Chinese manufacturers and good ones,I don't know how to tell from this far away.I do have a brilliant Chinese CD player tho.

  16. This Chinese products "yes or no" forum will go on forever, get them bought and find out yourself.

  17. I bought some levers before and also just got some more now. Quality looks good and a couple if friends who are into engineering have said how good they thought the products coming over now are and they have had them on their bikes for a few years now....
