Winter tyres

  1. So I've just noticed that my rear tyre is well over due for replacing, I'm planning on using the bike through the winter to commute. So is it worth getting winter tyres? The cheeper and longer lasting the better. I have had look online and MichelinPilot Road and Dunlop Sportmax RoadSmart seem to get good reviews.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Fit chains, that should do it :upyeah:

    Or BT16s

  3. Some ppl swear by Michel pil rds but the bridgestone BT30's are worth a look too...or chains..

  4. Haven't yet tried the BT30s but I used to have BT023s and they were very good when it was wet and horrible. Didn't really feel any difference between grip on wet and dry days with the BT023s, and I commute on my bike all year round (save for the snow and very icy conditions). The only reason I don't currently have BT023s is because Ducati Nice didn't have any when my bike needed new tyres on the way back from Italy.

The other half now swears by the Michelin Pilot Road 3s and has them fitted to both his bikes (his Kawasaki Z1000SX and now his newly acquired Monster 695).

  7. +another 1 for Pilot Road 3s. Awesome tyres, all weathers but shockingly good in the wet especially. I got 7000 odd miles from a rear on TL1000s ridden hard all winter and well into this summer.

  8. Im not a pilot road 3 fan myself, although a buddy of mine got 14k kms out of his set on a gsxr1000. Is a smooth enough rider ( quick too ). He swears by them.

    For me, T30's will do.

  10. I prefer road pilots 2, I found the 3 a little squirmy for my liking.

  11. Just to let you know that the Road pilot 2 is being fazed out. There is hardly any stock left and I could not get a rear at all, so do not buy the 2's.:upyeah:

  12. You'll be doing well to get the P3s to squirm in the winter. 25 degrees plus and yes you can.

I found the sipes really aid warm up as well as shifting water. On my 2nd set after 4 sets of Angel STs with a set of BT023 GTs in between.

Michelin are my favourite commuter tire - CB1300 6k miles from the rear and 9k ish from the front. The carcass is knackered and out or shape on the right shoulder before the tread is an issue. But she is a big old bird.

The shoulder thing was worse on the Angel Sts and appalling on the BT023s - they were just shit all round. Rock hard, no feel and take an age to warm up. The non GTs may be better as the carcass or side wall isnt as stiff. cant remember which. But now ive found the Pilot Road 3's i wont be tempted to change any time soon.

  13. +1. PR3's. Accept no substitute. So popular no stock here in Australia for the next 8 weeks! Good inventory planning Michelin Australia. Berks.

Thank God for America. 2 sets inbound and cheaper than local.

  14. and the winner is PR3's by a mile. Great winter tyre, very good summer tyre too. Warm up quick, shift loads of water out the way. What I would suggest is changing that back to something sportier in the spring, then pop the PR3 back on for next winter :upyeah:

  15. I have used PR3s before. Am I mad wanting to put some on my 2013 hyper SP for the winter?

  16. Smart, not mad

  17. Cheers guys, got myself a PR3 on the back and will change the front to match when it's due. I'm not looking forward to commuting in the middle of winter :/

  18. Id NEVER mix tyres....

  19. Depends what you are mixing. Long as tread is compatible for shifting water and profiles similar, ie supercorsa and standard diablo probably wont work well, be of for commuting. Depends on how much life left in the other tyre

  20. Too many variables for me bradders.... I like consistency.

The Super 10 ate a rear Metzler EXP (7k mls - not bad ) ( fookin great tyres ) and I manged to get a usedd one with 500 mls on it. The front was fine. But if i couldnt have sourced a rear I was gonna get a new set 9 Metzler Tourance Next ).
