Wiring issue! What have I done!! Please help!!

  1. Well the weather was nice today so I thought I would pull the 749 out and do a few jobs, including replacing some battery cables to cure the oh so common difficult start issues. Now I am no Mechanic, but I do tinker although wiring has never been my thing. Can't be that difficult though - remove some wires and put some others in? Well, after fiddling about for a ridiculous amount of time I managed to get it back in one piece, and tried to start it, and this happens...

It is kind of a ticking, like a sparking (although can't see any) and the right fan seems to run for some reason - no voltage or temp, and the code icon? And if I try and start it I get nothing! Please someone help and guide me in the right direction - or I live in Crewe, Cheshire if you want to come lend a hand :D??

    Any ideas??

Thanks in advance all, and yes I know this is my fault!!

  2. You already know it's a wiring issue. It sounds shorted out somewhere?? Have you checked that you replace the battery wiring as you took it off? You've not connected to the wrong side of a solenoid or relay? I'm not up on 749 wiring so just thinking aloud!

  3. Thanks for the reply! 99% sure that it is as it was before - unsure how it effects the fan and other bits though, really can't figure out what it's doing! I think the ticking may be the fan stopping/starting! I will double check all is right again though

  4. do you get a 'error code' without turning the engine over?....

  5. If you've connected a live feed to something that's normally switched then stuff will work when it shouldn't. The other thing to check is that the earths are all clean and tight?

  6. I haven't got a diagnostic to check for codes, but the engine doesn't even turn over!

  7. it dont sound like a fan.maybe a starter motor?.........

  8. I guess I need to really go over it all - pretty confident all is right though!

  9. Starter motor worked fine before, and wouldn't explain the other weirdness?

  10. does the sound(clink clink clink) happen when you press the start button,or when you turn the ignition on?...

  11. As soon as the ignition is on it starts making the sound - start button does nothing

  12. right,as nick says,its a wiring problem.

  13. retrace what you did,and double check,it sounds like you have a stray wire.

  14. Do you know which wires would relate to the fan/ lack of voltmeter / thermostat?

  15. Yeah, I think a good retrace is in order, just wondering if anyone would know which I am looking for with the symptoms given?

  16. sorry,not on the 749/9** range....maybe nick does.?.

  17. out there but you've not put the indicator relay in the wrong place its the same size as the others
a loose relay will often buzz or click

once had mad flashing idiot lights and everything else when l inadvertently mixed up the indicator and general relay on a SS
    regards Steve

  18. That sounds horrible and I bet you were bricking it when you heard that.

You have done something so +1 to going over everything. I dont think its a great idea to leave the tray hanging either.

Worth checking all connections and main fuse etc as it may not be one of the connections you have messed with but you may have pinched a wire or something.

What exactly have you done when you say that you have been working on the wiring?

Can you tell which area the sound is coming from?

    Dash?

    Battery?

    Battery box.

It sounds like arcing which if it is, isnt great.

Could just be fuel pump relay as I didnt hear it prime when you turned the key, just clicking.

If that is what it is you will be able to feel it doing it.

If you dont know an error code check is done by holding down the left dash button with ignition off and keeping it pressed, turning ignition on.

If it sounds like its coming from the battery box and the fuel pump isnt priming then remove the fuel pump relay and then turn the ignition on and see if it clicks. if it doesnt then its the relay and you can swap it for the headlight relay as it is the same part. Headlight relay is located on the underside of the front fairing above the black cover on the offside of the bike.

BTW thats a good tip if it ever fails on you out on the road.

    Hope you sort it.

  19. that does sound a bit too loud for a relay in 'tripping' mode. long shot makes me think that it could be an alarm that needs resetting after the battery has been disconnected? I don't know where your standard relays are on a 749 but I seem to remember there is one hidden close to the battery which is prone to playing up as it is fitted in such a way that rainwater etc cannot escape. Hopefully Phil (Ghost) will pick this up.

  20. Oh and if all that is different is that you have added an earth then I would remove it again and see if that is the problem.

You did attach the earth strap to the negative battery terminal and not the positive, right?
