998 Won't Prime... Won't Start

  1. Hi guys,
So I haven't started my bike in a while, had the battery on an optimate for ages to resurrect it. Fitted it last night and its primed but didn't have enough power to turn it over.
So I had a spare battery not the right one for the bike, but I thought "oh it will be fine" famous last words! Connected it up. It wouldn't turn over, and there was a fizzing crackling noise by the battery after I hit the start button that lasted a few second after I took my thumb of the start button. So thought uh oh, took the battery off. And recharged the proper one.
Went to it this morning, tried to start it, and the fuel pump won't prime... but the bike turns over and everything. I have checked the fuse and its fine.....
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  2. Are y
Are you sure you got the polarity with the spare battery right?

  3. Hi, Yes the polarity was right with the spare. I really hope I haven't done anything to much to it.

  4. Fuse blown? Kill switch in run mode?

  5. Hi,
Checked all the fuses. All ok. And kill switch. Its weird.

  6. Have to taken tank off or lifted? Is there an immobiliser or tilt switch that could have been activated by lack of power?

  7. Could be the side stand relay beside the battery , I had a problem with my 748s only priming sometimes and it turned out to be that relay

  8. image.png Take out the relay and try this and see does it prime/start

  9. Cheers guys will try tomorrow

  10. The 998 wiring is unique compared to the other models in the 748-9** range. Did you start the bike within 5 seconds of switching on the ignition. If not then it will not start as it has a cut out in the system, which I believe is ECU controlled.

On these models pin out 6 on the non motor side goes to the fuel pump relay, you could check for voltage\continuity there.

The fizzing could be wiring burning (out!) I had a dead battery go "rouge" on my 998 and despite even having ignition off and the kill button on I could not stop the engine turning over, I had to physically disconnect the battery to stop the danger of burning out the wiring.

I would check through the whole system and also use a good battery to make sure the ECU has the correct voltage running through it.

It's possible wiring, a fuse or the ECU could be at fault.

  11. Had a similar problem on mine a few years back, check the two small black relays on the r/h side of the bike between the battery and the clutch. One of them does the fuel pump, can't remember which one of the two as it was a long time ago but easy to check - just swap them over and if it runs then cheap to replce.
