Won't Start

  1. As some of you are aware, this is the third ss I've bought as a non runner, but I have paid more attention to this one in the rebuild. Too day I tried to starter the old girl to no avail. Lots of back firering from the exhausts and carbs, but not even trying to fire. The last two I had started but ran like poo, but were fine with adjustments, but I cant even get this one to fire. Even tried some easy start but nothing. Im thinking timing, any other suggestion would be great

  2. So bit the bullet and pulled the ignition side case off and I hope some can confirm im a complete idiot and put the fly wheel on 100° odd out. Engine is set to TDC on the horizontal cylinder according to the marks on the fly wheel, and checking the cylinder, but I belive the pick up marks should be above them and their at the top??

  3. from memory, with the horizontal cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke and the timing arrow on the timing case pointing to the TDC mark, the second set of timing marks (counting turning the engine anti-clockwise) should align with the two pick-up centres.

I can't think why you would have assembled other than this (similar to yours):-

also, you didn't remove any gears behind flywheel and starter ring?

  4. So timing marks is as per the Haynes in line with the key way so not now sure!!

  6. So your looking at a grade A dickhead, got the HT leads on the wrong cylinders, swapped them, fired straight up. Was running hot so turned the mixture screens out another quarter turn seems better, but ran out of time today. Will try to balance the carbs tomorrow and keep adjusting the mixture. I took her up and down the road and its seems slower than my old 750, very heavy clutch, and a bit sluggish, but I guess a little tuning will sort that out. Thanks for the help Chris

  8. Im nothing if im not honest mate, too honest at times lol. Will balance the carbs up tomorrow night, adjust the mixture if it needs it, just got to get a new front brake light switch, and its MOT time

  9. :grinning: You won’t do it again Lumbux
Good to see you have sorted it out

  10. Got the old girl out last night, and another school boy error, hadn't tightened up the sparks plug!! So did that and left her running to warm up. Rune well, revs fine so decided to leave as is for now and see if I can put a few miles on her. On thing is the charging light stays on untill you rev the bike, going to check the charging rate, should I be looking for 14.5 ish volts?

  11. Yup - should be about 14.5V at the battery.

  12. This was my first thoughts on reading the first post, have done it myself! Glad you got it going.

  13. Charging all sorted, bike starts and runs, but is a bit flat under load when riding, I haven't balanced the carbs yet, was going to hold on and put a few miles on her, gets to 80 no problem, but just disentangle seem to have any pep, or are they just like that, only have experience of my old 750.

  14. Nah it does sound like the carbs need a bit of setup work. I’d seen over a ton on my old 600 and whilst not a quick bike by any means it felt like it pulled strongly all the way up there.
