950 Worst Position For A Hella Socket!

  1. Now doing a trip in September across the top of Spain and up through France so thought I would prepare….

I use the Ultimate Addons case and holder so as there is a hella socket on the Multi I ordered their charging adapter but thought it could be a bit tight.

What an awful position for yet hella socket! This adapter is a 90 degree one and you can’t use it. Whichever way you fit it, the handlebars hit it.

will have to get a straight socket with lead…..

  2. I use one of these to provide power from the DIN socket on my 1260 MTS to my Givi Tank bag. The flat back and edge opposite the strain relief catches nicely on the spring loaded lid of the socket. Effectively locking it in place.

  3. Is your din socket in the same place as mine? I was thinking a straight plug in one with lead hidden under the right hand plastics

  4. Yes, in the same place. With the plug in the socket and held in place by the spring loaded lid the cable exits upwards IIRC. The cable is a curly one and plugs into the gland socket on the front face of my Givi tank bag, threading through between the bar clamps. The curly cable gives some flexibility which helps. Once in place it doesn't move or disconnect.

I did learn the hard way that it should be plugged in with the ignition off after I managed to blow the accessory fuse twice on one tour plugging it into a live socket...

Givi S111 Power Hub, I cut off the DC connector and soldered the 90º Hella plug on it's place.

If you want to power your phone directly then one of these may work, I have no experience but it looks slim enough to work on the MTS without fouling the bars.

  5. or you can just buy one of these, available with different ends

  6. Trouble is the handlebars will probably hit that as it looks almost the same size as the one I have just sent back.

Have ordered a Cliff Top din to usb adapter which might do the job. Its straight and has twin usb ports so can then use the cable I bought. If it doesnt work, its free returns, thanks Amazon!

  7. That damn Hello/Din plug is such a useless piece of hardware. It's bulky in the best iteration and often prone to get loose.
I've purchased a few different ones and they're all iffy at best.
The jack location is also highly questionable. Personally, I would have just preferred a USB or an SAE jack.
Many DIY guys have converted the DIN jack to a USB. I don't have that skill set thus I've fished a USB cable up-front. The same can be done for a 12v SAE cable.

  8. The handlebars do not touch it as i use it on my 1260

  9.
  10. Hi, I use this from ultimate addons, does not catch on handlebars, fits quite well and allows full movement.

  11. I gave up on the Hella socket because the plug kept falling out, which is not ideal when it then disappears down into the area where the forks are, making retrieval at speed tricky/hazardous.

I ended up taking a feed off the back of it and installing my own USB socket. That in itself isn't ideal because it's not weatherproof. I've debating buying a sealed USB charger designed for fitting on boats, but it's kind of chunky.

I've been toying with designing something bike-specific for years (I'm a mechanical engineer), as there seems to be a gap in the market for a decent weatherproof charging solution.

  12. I ended up with one of these - admittedly it is on a V4 but doesn't interfere with the bars and stays in the socket plus it is intelligent and only powers a USB device when the engine is running and the voltage is up to the required level.

May be hard to find - mine came from the US!

  13. I’ve ended up with this from Amazon which looks big but fits perfectly with no issues with the handlebars. I already bought a lead so should hopefully be able to route that across and then up to the bars where the phone will be….

  14. Exactly the device I’ve been considering. It’s a little bit large but very nicely designed. Just needs enough room to mount it.
