Would You Buy A Second Hand Helmet?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Drinky, Sep 3, 2016.

  1. As the title says I'm just gauging people opinion on buying second hand helmet. The reason being is I've got a Shark-r Pro Stinger that has been worn a few times but has spent most of its life in a helmet bag hanging in the garage. I can vouch its never been dropped or anything of the like but there are two small marks on the front where its obviously got a small stone chip.
Would come with clear and dark visors. Whats peoples opinions before I put it on fleabay?

  3. If it was joeys old race lid then yes !
If you were skint and it was a choice between a crap £50 lid or a pre owned arai then yes. Maybe .

  4. Sure, and I have previously.

  5. I could sign it for you and you could put it on your mantelpiece.

  6. I bought my X-Lite off of here and use that daily.

  7. ive sold a few lids on fleabay without any hassle, so yep

  8. Bought and sold a lot of helmets on fleabay with no problems. As a non smoker, i always ask if its from a smokefree home n if it is then I'll bid with no concerns

  9. My current lid is an Arai Tour x in Ducati colours, was second hand saving me around £200 and was in great condition. My lid before that was a new Caberg stunt and the one before that an Arai astro r that was also second hand. I tend to when buying second hand, go for helmets that were high priced when new as generally owners tend to take more care of them.

  10. Me No, I guess the question could be has anyone survived a serious crash in a second hand helmet. Even then it just reflects on that helmet not all second hand helmets. Safety procedures only work if you follow them every time. Just my tupence, good luck

  12. Same here...

I sold an RX7-GP Haga rep on eBay with certificate from Arai condemning it. It had a small chip on the back of it from hitting the ground. The guy that bought it knew the situation and was going to have the chip repaired and use it.... Up to him, his choice.... However, what is to say he wouldn't resell it and not declare the previous issue? You just never know what you are buying.
However, how many people wear an "out of date" helmet? Is that taking just as big a chance?....

  13. In a word, NO.

But there is nothing stopping you from selling it if someone wants to buy it.

  14. I keep my helmets longer than the 5 years recommended by Arai. Can't see it being a problem because they only see a fraction of the use & weather that a helmet used everyday for commuting etc. would.

But, no I wouldn't buy a second hand helmet.

  16. Would you buy a second hand 160mph motorcycle?

  17. No.

  18. No, Always new

  19. Some years ago I had a long email conversation with Shoei regarding my old helmet that I'd had for about 15 years and whether it needed replacing.
It was not used daily and was always kept in its bag when not used, had never been dropped or damaged.
They said if the lining was still ok then the shell would likely not have degraded due to exposure to UV Rays so it was probably fine.
I have replaced it now but wore it for another year after the conversation.
