I went to Silverstone once in '95 or' 96 and cheered Carter till he fell off on the last lap of the 250s and saw Gardner win the 500 race. It rained from the minute we arrived until after we got home and I said I would NEVER go back. However, My mate is coming over from NZ and this is one of the things he wants to do, so I would like recommendations from anyone who has been to WSB in recent years to help us see the racing. My memory of things almost 20 yeras ago before H&S went mad was that the fences were too far from the track to see much at all, so I expect we will have to buy grandstand seats for ££££ and take good binoculars. I hope I'm wrong.
Been the last couple of years, tickets if I remember rightly are about £50 for a roving grandstand ticket....not sure if they do allocated stands for the WSB as it's never really hugely crowded. There are a few spots you can get fairly close but mainly you are a good distance from the track.
As the track is so long the superbike races are only about 18 laps which means less opportunities to view any action. It is very flat, open and remote with virtually no atmosphere. 50 000 people hardly seem to look like a crowd when you spread them around this enormous place. Although i love riding around silverstone i think they have killed WSBK as a spectator event by holding the meeting here. Perhaps the best option for grandstand viewing is the infield complex of corners ( village and the loop i think )just before the run down the back straight towards the old woodcote corner. Having said all that, if you have a friend from NZ coming and he has not seen a supers race in Europe then it still beats not going. Just make sure to press record before you leave the house to watch when you get back home.
Silverstone is one of the worst tracks to spectate at. As previously mentioned, it's huge and flat. There are lots of empty grandstands and there's no atmosphere. Try standing by the fence at Brooklands corner, at least you can see them approaching down the Wellington straight and then watch them go around Luffield and Woodcote.
