WTF? - Insurance question

  1. Good afternoon all you lovely folks,

    Have a question for y'all.

So, my bike has just been shipped in from Australia and I am about to get it registered with the DVLA.
Customs have been cleared, the bike is in my possession and in order to get a rego plate I have to do
    the MOT and get insurance.

Well, not as easy as it sounds...Most insurers will not insure me unless I already have a registration number
so the cheap ones like ebike can't be used. If I go with one that does insure on the VIN/chassis number, they
will charge me several hundred quid more than the other companies. The providers I have spoken to also tell me
that I can get third party only, and that I will commit to 12 months before I can change the policy to include
    theft & fire.

Any idea if there is some way of getting around this? Don't really feel like paying 900 pounds for insurance
when I have been quoted 500 by ebike (but I can't go with the cheaper quote of course...)

Doing the MOT on Saturday...this is wank.

  2. Speak to Adrian Flux

  3. Yeah, did. They quoted me 875 quid for third party only...

  4. FFS they used to be pretty good.

  5. Feel like the little kid that is too short to reach the cookie jar. I can see the bike, touch it, smell it but can't fukken ride it. Makes my penis shrink.

  6. Does it have an Australian registration number? If so, you might find someone to insure it temporarily with that till you get a Brit reg - s'what I did a few years ago with Norwich Union/Aviva

  7. Nah, it doesn't have an Aussie number any more, chucked the plate before I moved here and I don't think I am registered with the RTA over there any more...

  8. Those are some shocking prices. My 1999 R1 only cost me £60 to insure for the entire year. That nearly doubled to £113 when I added the 996 to the policy.

  9. Yeah, going to make me look like a right mug if I pay 900 per annum....

  10. Wonder if you can just get temp insurance for like a week or something to cover the DVLA registration, then go with a cheaper policy?

  11. That's definitely worth looking in to. Adrian Flux wanted me to commit to 12 months, so not too hopeful.

    This is giving me syphilis....

  12. Also joined the Ducati owners club in hope that I might be able to score a deal with some insurer. Wrote to the email address listed on the owners club to get more info on insurers they have deals with, but no response from them either. Am I just having one of those days??

  13. In my experience those companies which offer "special discount for clubs" etc, dont. Ive yet to find one which comes in cheaper than just looking on confused.com.

Adrian Flux do offer short term insurance, i insured one of my cars with them for a month only when i was trying to sell it in order to make sure i could give peopel test drives legally. It actually cost me more than a 12 month policy did with them as I couldnt use my No Claims Bonus on it as that had moved onto my new cars policy.

  14. I see, thanks for the information. I guess I''ll just have to pull my pants down, bend over, take it like George Michael and laugh between the tears.

  15. Called about 34 gazillion companies to see if they do temporary cover, doesn't seem like anyone is doing that either? WTF??

  16. Another option is that when you take out new insurance you have a 14 day "cooling off " period, where you can cancel it by. Im not sure what charge they make for this cancelation, but i seem to recall it was something like £25. So it might be another option....

  17. Speak to a trusted dealer who could register the bike in their name, having insurance and MOT etc capability, then transfer the bike into your name once that is all done. You retain your sanity, plus the fee they might charge you should be much less than temporary insurance if it was to be available. It puts an additional name on the log book, but so what?

  18. You could try Carole Nash, they do all sorts of odd insurance policies and if anyone can help, likely them

  19. Get a quote, agree to it but offer to pay monthly, pay the deposit, cancel the direct debit immediately, ignore all future correspondence from that company...
