Xenon/hid Replacement - Recommendations

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Mattmk1, Feb 8, 2018.

  1. Hi All,

Appreciate that xenon lamps can divide opinion, but when i bought my 1198, they were already fitted. For the record the light output was excellent and i never had any issues with other drivers raging at me.

Anyway, few months ago, the xenon died. I assume its a ballast fault but for ease and piece of mind im just going to swap the whole kit out for new.

Is there a recommended kit to use? Not fussed on price, just want something reliable.

Reverting to OE bulbs isnt really an option now as the original wiring has been chopped and spliced!

    Thanks
    Matt

  2. Yip as above - your MOT station will fail now :worried:

  3. hid kits have always been illegal but, most testers have no issues with them and most fitted with them have passed. It will be interesting to see if the take up changes

  4. Ok, ill take a look at the wiring this weekend and see if it can be salvaged back to standard.

Worth noting that this is what VOSA have to say on the new MOT:

    6) The test in Great Britain is required to comply with the European Framework Directive on periodic technical inspection. In this regard the annual test is to be amended in April this year to include the satisfactory operation of automatic levelling and washing systems where these are fitted. However, these systems are not mandatory for all vehicles fitted with HID lamps as it is dependant on light output and/or suspension movement. As it is not possible for a tester to determine at the time of test (annual or roadside) whether these components are required, there is no reason for rejection, either in the directive or the amended manual.

So i think an MOT fail for HIDs would be disputable at best.

  5. This bit seems to be what your thinking of?

Some motorcycles may be fitted with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. It is not permitted to convert existing halogen headlamp units for use with HID bulbs. If it is clear that such a conversion has been carried out, rather than replacing the entire unit with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs, the headlamp should be rejected.

Again, I'd be surprised if you suddenly see lots of testers start mentioning them or refusing them. Most I've had done who have mentioned the hid's nave gone along the lines of they are a good idea

  6. According to my MOT man they have been passed with an advisory notice until March when they will be automatically failed.
