My bike has done just under 1200 miles since new. I want to change the front sprocket to 14T. Do I need to change the chain at the same time given the amount of miles it has done with most of them been very light load during running in period? Anybody recommend what sprocket to go for and where to buy from? Thanxs Mark
Chain should be fine. Fit a Renthal sprocket. There are others, but they are a quality bit of kit that last well.
5mm allen key to remove clutch slave and sprocket cover. 10mm hex key for hub clamp, C-spanner for hub to slacken chain. Hammer and punch to knock back the tab washer on sprocket nut. 32mm socket to undo the nut. Torque wrenches to tighten nut back up (180nM) and to torque the hub clamp bolts back up (30nM). Sprocket nut is tight so you'll need a long bar to swing on
I haven't got a torque, probably cost me as much as letting JHP fit the sprocket during its service. I'm also a mechanical novice, is this something I should leave to somebody who knows a Spanner from a Hammer
I was bored For the sake of maybe half hours labour, if you don't have the tools, then get it done at service. If it goes wrong, it won't be cheap and if you don't have the tools, it'll not be cheap.....
I'm beginning to suspect i'd be better off letting JHP do it. As you say, expensive either way. At least i know when i'm riding its been done to specification. I should be more confident but my last attempt at DIY mechanics was changing brake pad on the Golf and i royally fucked it up.
Wow, just in time. I've just picked up a DP one for a decent price and will be fitting it soon. Nelly, in your experience, is it a good idea to change the locking tab at the same time as I think I read up somewhere that the standard ones are shit soft? Or is it alright to bray it flat and reuse bending back a different side? Cheers, ian
Nelly is right to a certain degree but depends on what bike? My street fighter had to have chain split as cant pull sprocket off with chain is situ. I just bought a Ducati replacement sprocket from my dealer £14 and no you dont need to replace chain but std is crap buy a D.I.D chain mint
Bikes an 848 Corse SE. Yeah the OEM chain is crap. I've never ridden in the wet, cleaned and oiled it regularly and it still pitted and the plating is starting to come off. Given it's only done 1200 miles since new i'm reluctant to throw it away for a D.I.D.
I have kept my std chain I think you have the same problem with evo as I have with SF not sure, I pick up my Corse on saturday but dealer is sorting front sprocket for me as part of deal and venture shield to protect matte paint job. The smaller front sprocket is well worth doing though, did it on my older Evo when I had it, my SF my 899 now sold. Makes the world of difference.
If your struggling to get the sprocket off with the chain on (which you will) drop the rear sprocket off and there'll be plenty of play on the chain
Just a quick update, just looked at pics of the sprocket side of 848 Evo cover comes of easy enough but as Toby says, sprocket wont come off easily, it will travel a little along the spline then the chain stops it coming any further as your right up against the frame. Rear sprocket off then you can loosen chain around front sprocket well pull it of the teeth anyway, that should give you enough to pull front sprocket off
Ian as for tab I reused my stock one and just bent back along original crease, as long as you dont keep bending it back and forth it will be fine
