  1. Hi all. got a 996 barn find for 1500, and bought it without starting or riding it.!! I'm a hgv mechanic, although i have worked on many different vehicles, as i used to be in the REME. Had a 900 monster for 3.5 years when i lived in london, and then bought a s2r 800 which i had for 3.5 also. Had a yoshi engined slingshot, k6 gixer, xt 600 Tenere, gpz600, sv1000, husky240, 350 valve n2, mbx50 and 80 in the past. The 900 had my spanners out practically every fortnight, and i have had a bit of grief so far(with my 996) the latest being the alternator nut, but have been fairly lucky that there has been nothing terminal. thinking of getting a lightened flywheel while im there if funds allow. any suggestions for reasonably priced ones would be smashing.

  7. nice one Densel - re: undoing/doing up alternator nut - i've just copied and pasted this from another thread :-
"Clarke CEW 10000 every time :- Clarke CEW1000 240V ½" Electric Impact Wrench with 4 Sockets - Power Tools, Impact Drivers & Wrenches, Impact Wrenches - Electric

I would never have believed it possible that 13 amps could do the job but as of 4 years ago I am a converted man and would never be without one - good quality at an extraordinary price considering. I hate the term but literally 'plug and play'. Can be awkward getting the socket on and off the crude 'C' clip snubber but apart from that 10/10 :)

EDIT You don't even need to use a restraining tool when undoing such is the instant/huge torque delivered."

  8. Nice one Chris. will be getting one on these on wed,!! will be needing the holding tool (£28 from ebay posted) to do up my nichols bolts.

  9. I think the one in the link is still the cheapest online price as well :)

  10. Welcome and good luck with the project

  11. I just machine them down on the diameter, until there is a 3mm wall thickness on the side that houses the sprag clutch outer ring.

  12. Hi and welcome
    Guvs.

  13. Cheers guvs

  14. Diameter is outer edge and sprag clutch is in the middle?? Not too sure what you mean, sorry. Will have a loos at it and see if it makes more sense. Regards

  15. Sorry not made myself too clear.
Turn down the outer diam so the overall size is reduced. A fair bit will have to come off. None needs machining off the rotor or sprag faces.

  16. Brilliant. I get what you mean now. Will be able to buy an EPROM chip with the lolly I saved.!! I have heard not to go under 1 kg but have seen billet ones at 780g?? Any recommendations .?? Cheers

  17. +1

  18. How an earth do you find a 996 in a barn?! You must have better quality of barns out your way than near me!!!

Welcome and good luck with the project!!!!

  19. hereford has good quality barns. Got it back together now, and went on the A40 to Llandovery, then up to Aberystwyth. The Aber to Leominster (A44/A470) is the best road i have ever ridden. Got rid of my chicken strips, first time out in 3-4 months. Will defo be back there with my new corsa's on, to scrub them in. Also, it has shellgrip on nearly every corner.Mint.!!
