Update failed and now when I turn the unit on, I get a several messages along the lines there are no maps to access. I’ve removed the micro SD card, tried a factory reset, tried Mapinstall all to no avail. Garmin website is about as useless as I am. In the simplest form, how do I reinstall maps ? Andy
You have to run the map update again from your PC using Garmin Express. It can take an hour or two to complete once you've set it running. I've never managed to get a map update to run successfully with the GPS itself connected to WiFi.
Yep, tried that 3 times so far and after about an hour, the download bombs every time. Just done a software update and trying a fourth time but it seems to be only a European cities update, not European maps ! This all started trying to update the maps in Basecamp on my PC. There are definitely maps in the device memory as I get a map displayed but on start up I get a series of error messages. Andy
Used to be able to see the map files with my old Garmin plugged into a PC, this doesn't look doable now though... Was going to suggest deleting the mapping files and try again... My XT is completely up to date, all running as it should. Can't find that mapping data anywhere in the file system using Windows Explorer... However, thinking of switching to completely MyRouteApp for planning and navigation as tested that on a recent trip to Germany and frankly it was better than the Garmin.
I have been successfully using tomtom app on my phone. Streets ahead of Garmin tbh. ^^ able to load routes from my routeapp without issue too. Updating maps on my Garmin 395lm was a nightmare pre-trip. The usual, no satnav connected…took many attempts and many hours to sort. Then, mid trip, the Garmin would not start. Took several ‘hard resets’ to get it to work. Only kept the Garmin so I can select a fuel stop if required without needing to fiddle with the phone route… All in all, overpriced American antiques that have completely failed to keep up with the times both with the hardware and the software.
To be honest the XT has worked well for me. It's streets ahead of the Zumo 590 I had previously in so much the transfer of routes from MRA was simple using the Garmin Drive app on my phone to send routes from MRA to the sat nav. The routing isn't bad just that MRA is far better at sticking to the route as planned and you effectively run the routes on the same system. The advent of Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, in the recent MRA release will be brilliant once there's a half way decent compatible panel and MRA have everything fully sorted. For the time being I've invested in an SP Connect mounting and wire-free charging system. I do agree with your sentiment that Garmin haven't kept pace with technology and, as far as automotive navigation is concerned, they're on borrowed time.
Happened to me a year ago, ended up with a refurbed unit out of warranty by Garmin. Call them or do cha,t once you get hold or a real bod they are fairly good
I dont think I would have another. My first Garmin, a 350lm, only lasted 3 years before complete failure. On my second Garmin and it is acting up after four years. Not exactly cheap. Always issues connecting to a pc. With previous and current nav. Both units have needed hard restarts on tour and at map update time. Batteries are sub standard. Add in the now excessive cost for one of the higher range units and I think I am finished with them. Considering any decent smart phone will operate tomtomapp, it looks like my Garmin cradle will soon be removed.
Finally (after 6 hours of angst) managed a successful reinstall of the latest maps and the unit boots up without error messages. I accept that Garmin is not everyone’s cup of tea and Garmin Basecamp is probably even less so but it works well enough for me. Thank you all for your help. @El Toro, this thread can be closed now.
