Zx12r Not Starting.

  1. Hmm, just after a little help here. My brother has a ZX12r and has had some trouble starting it recently. The starting issue initially seemed to be the battery getting too low to fire it up after being left overnight (he did manage to almost completely discharge the old one stupidly one day leaving the ignition on so had assumed it was a knackered battery). He bought a new battery today and fitted it, however it still won't fire at all, just turns over but there is no sign of life. He was bump starting it but last night it wouldn't do that either. Previously also after bumping the bike would fire and ride fine for the rest of the day.

Anybody know what could be causing this? Has been running fine apart from the starting problem. It does have a Datatool 3 alarm on there too, I mention this as I think this might be the cause of it all. He thinks otherwise but I know these things are a right pita when they start ageing.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

  2. Sounds like it could be the immobiliser part of the alarm but it's hard to be sure. If it's turning over and just not firing it sounds like that as my r1 started doing the same.

The pita is trying to remove the alarm as they're threaded in to the loom good and proper.

    Alarms are shit

  3. has he or other owners, disconnected the clutch/sidestand switchs,i only ask as a mate had same on a blade and one of the cross connections he'd made to bypass them had come apart while hed been rooting about in the battery area..
obviously the same for unmodified switches, perhaps theyve failed.

  4. Just spotted this....

I'm pretty sure that's the regulator/rectifier in the back tail pod. That was the connector, covered in what looks like engine oil and looking very worse for wear...

  5. I had the same with my ZX12R,

This was after receiving a call at work saying that the alarm was going off by itself.
This was promptly followed by another call saying not only was it going off, but my wife and son could smell burning.
While en route I got my son to keep trying the fob which eventually turned the thing off; upon arrival at the house I was greeted by that acrid burning plastic smell that accompanies an electrical fire.
Closer examination revealed the main unit had started to melt down.
Anyway I traced the wires away from the unit bridging any that were needed, I also marked each and every wire at both the loom ends and the alarm ends incase I had to put it back.
So the moment of truth arrived, ignition on, clocks sweeping performing their diagnostics, and the engine just turned over and over, but not firing.
I then checked the fuses and all seemed fine.
After many hours of reciting the expletive bible she just wouldn't fire up, so I grudgingly called a local bike shop to have it removed to their workshop.
Then came a real annoying and embarrassing moment when they reported that it was ready for collection, what was wrong?
A bloody fuse that sits on top of the fuel tank had blown! but I'd checked and double checked all of the fuses, and so had the mechanics in the workshop, apparently a young apprentice with keen eyes had spotted a minute fracture in one of the fuses, so my advice is to check all the fuses first then go from there.
Then get the alarm removed / disconnected asap.

  7. Had a bit of a look around at this but my knowledge is poor so looks like it's off to the garage to be assessed :( That melted plug is a touch worrying and I'm guessing means an electrical fault somewhere (by the looks of it he's been lucky it didn't catch fire).

Thanks for the help here, is appreciated!
