I've stumbled across an opportunity to swap in my 2013 1199s (12k) for a 2013 1199r (3k). I'm looking at my bike plus £7k ish to do the deal. I do love the old girl dearly, but just walking past the 'R' gets the blood pumping. It's just too damn sexy. Advice gratefully received. M
If you can afford it, why not ? You are only on this earth for a limited time and physically able to bend yourself round something that is far to small for an even shorter period of time. I have absolutely no regrets buying my 1098R or my 748R come to that. Andy
Thanks Android. I work hard, don't drink, don't smoke. Apart from the bikes and surfing I'm as dull as dishwater with a few quid burning a hole in my pocket. 1 - 0 to the R then!
Dunno... to swap your bike for the equivilent model with 9000 miles less from a dealer I'd bet you'd need 3 grand to swap. 4 grand to upgrade is how my man maths works it out and that's a no brainer.
I've gone from the S to R and no regrets. I'm not sure its much faster but its definitely a looker!!!! Remember the R can be set to the latest model geometry which is meant to tame the ride a bit. I'm definitely quicker on my Pani R than the RSV4 RF.
After an hour or two of research the decision is made.. I'm getting an R! But! A 2015 or later. The difference between the pre 2015 and post 2015 is quite significant. Well worth the extra few grand.
Great choice! Royal seems to prefer his. And *allegedly* its pretty much a superleggera mk1 with the later R
You're spot on Bradders. The pre 2015 seems a bit of a money grab and basically a tarted up S. Apologies to all pre 2015 R owners. The 2015 R, as Bradders says isn't far off a Supereggera. My only concern now... I called my insurer (Ducati Ins) and asked what would it cost for a 2013 R worth c£20,000. They said they'll call the underwriter and get back to me. That was at 1pm today! No news is bad news I think.
The engines share many parts amongst a few other bits here and there, but still a lot of differences between them though. Regarding the OP's choice, The 2015 R's onwards are the 1's to have. The earlier 1's are good but quite wild. So enjoy the ride, at times you'll feel like a passenger.
I don't want to be the killjoy in this. I'm the first to use man maths to justify the unjustifiable but is it really worth it? I've been through this exact dilemma a few years ago where I had the thought of swapping my 1199S for an R. I had 7-8k to put to for an R. The main questions I asked myself were how good a rider am I? and what's the bike going to used for? If I was an expert rider using it on the track then I'd say buy the R but if your an average rider riding on the road then there is nothing the R can do that the S can't and you'd probably never notice a great deal of difference, certainly not 7k's worth of difference. Also for me there was the issue of insurance. For some reason the R was ridiculous to insure compared to my S. The R does look that bit extra special admittedly with the bare aluminium tank and carbon bits and it will give you bigger willy waving capabilities. In the end I kept my S and spent the money I would have used to swap to add a 1098S to the stable. Whatever happens this is one of life's nicer problems!
