853 Perceived Value

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Bullitt, Dec 28, 2016.

  1. Been thinking about an 853 project for many years now and one has just popped up on ebay...

It certainly looks like a very well sorted track bike with some nice parts on it, but is such a bike really worth £25k...? Heck, there are 2 x 996R's for sale at £20/£25k...

    Ducati 853R link to ebay....

    What's your thoughts?

  2. Thread moved

  3. @Android853sp what do you think!!
I don't think there will be a queue at his door at that price.

  4. Maybe he put the comma in the wrong place. 2500 maybe....

    :)

  5. Btw you could buy Ducati's bike of the year with a 1198 motor rebuilt for half that and I'd suggest it is more 'special ' with harder to source parts :)

  6. This is what I'm thinking, I just can't see were the value is - I've maybe lost touch with that era of bike...

Such projects are always going to loose money in a big way if selling as a complete bike. I guess he's just trying to recover as much as he can, or he's just had too much to smoke..!!

Good luck to him, and I mean that in the non-piss taking way.

  7. I'd be crying myslef to sleep every night for a decade if I spunked £25k on that in a moment of madness.

  8. Where do I start ? "bitza" with a few expensive parts but I'm not sure that the sum of the parts actually make a good bike. No real detail to the advert and some detail doesn't add up. A "new" engine built in 2011; receipts from both JHP and Pro Twin but no idea of the pedigree of the engine. If a 996RS swing arm has been fitted, the UK 748RS didn't use one, no mention of the right rocker and rear shock absorber. Not sure a 65mm exhaust system fits 748R headers and the pictures look like my 54mm system. Advert smacks of someone not knowing enough about what they are trying to sell. I've just been offered an unraced full works 748RS for a fraction of the cost. Steve is right, I don't think there will be a queue of people lining up to buy it. Far too specialist and anyone really interested will know what they were looking at. Still very pretty, a lot prettier than mine but I built mine for a lot less and the major cost was the engine, not the toys. Andy

  16. My focus for this year is to gather the parts of my 748R back together and put it back on the road. That means stripping down and rebuilding the 853 with the parts I've been collecting for this very reason. It also gives me the opportunity to try out the 1098R on the track whilst the 853 gets rebuilt. I hope to get an opportunity to take a close look at the 748RS and chat to the owner to see just how original it is. Never say never but without an attributed team or rider, the attraction is limited for me and anyway my 853 is the pinnacle of my aspiration. Andy
