How To Turn A 999 Into A Sport Classic

  1. Like the 3/4 shot best due to the 6 wheelie bins stuffed in the corner?

Noticed but was blaming paranoia :eyes::eyes::eyes:

  2. It's a great effort and a lovely project but I still prefer the donor bike. You killed a perfect 749!

  3. Thought it was a 999S ?

  5. Now to bodywork, The most f**k up's definitely happened here..

    I'll start off with the tank from Redmax ;

I basically based the entire build of this tank fitting. Son of a diddly.

I looked at alot of sport classic chassis but could never find measurements on a 999 upper rail on the trellis frame, It was painfully close to fitting..

It was either take chunks out of the Redmax tank or.............make my own from foam.

After lots of expanding foam and alot of measurements from the real tank, I think 3 failed attempts, this happened.

I had planned to tip to make this a full fibreglass tank but after a quick google, Ethanol and Fibreglass aren't best buddies. It also gave me a chance to learn how to tig weld alloy which I've always wanted to do.

I mocked up CAD (cardboard added design) and bought a used 1098 fuel pump base, Much easier to fit than the 999/7490 one. Amazingly what actually came was a Corse Dynamics $300 one, This was a good day, I'm sure the thing cost me like £60.

Side pods add about 3 litres but look hideous on the welds..

I settled on 17 litres like the R model tanks after taking approximate mpg calculations and the range I wanted. Quite interesting that the number varies so much online, I later figured out trackday guys posted the numbers too, Handy!

done. With a very sexy filler cap from Merlin Motorsports.

As you'll tend to see for the fuel tank to be fitted the subframe had to get made and the fibreglass cover so you know how big or smaller the tank has to be, Basically everything had to get done at once..

onto the front and rear subframes..

  10. Nope!! Your are wrong sir, Nothing is permanent.

All you would need is bodywork, new front and rear subframe, front was a race unit anyway and the rear was bent! and wiring. Nothing has been cut on the chassis.

The early early plan was to make it easy to convert between this look and track 999 bodywork. Also.... The bike has been down the road many many times, the rear subframe was bend and it punched a hole in the termi system making it worthless, the waterpump housing also has massive scrapes!

  12. So it was settled.
I'd get the cheapest 749 base model I could find for £2000-£2500 and use the rest of the money for the project.
See, I knew it was there somewhere. Maybe change the thread title to 'How to look for a 749, end up with a 999 and then turn that 999 in to a Sport Classic'.

  18. Student! I'd be doing well to be a lecturer at one of the only uni's in the world that does Motorcycle Motorsport engineering at the tender age of 23!!
