1200 Pikes Peak Will Not Fire Up At Start Button

  1. Not sure what a half full battery means but it doesn't sound enough. The cold weather a couple of weeks ago would mean it needs charging if not used since.

  2. When you press the starter and nothing happens, do the lights etc go dim, do the electrics shut down altogether or does pushing the starter simply have no effect whatsoever?

  3. The second option...

  4. Its sounding like there may not be enough juice in that battery of yours mate if I'm honest. Had similar on the 1198 early last year when I forgot to hook it up to the trickle charger before going back to work... Everything seemed normal but wouldn't even turn the engine over when I hit the start button.

Also had similar with a loose starter lead too ;)

  5. That would suggest s corroded or loose battery terminal.
There's enough of s connection to carry a light load but a heavy draw from the starter motor causes it to break down immediately.
    Clean and tighten the terminals.
The battery may be buggered as well of course but you may be lucky.
    Have you charged it?

  6. I’d take the battery off and charge, then you get to check the terminal connections too and make sure they are firm back on. The big twin needs a lot of oomph to get it going.

  13. Top multimeter tip.
Buy some needle probes and at least one decent croc clip set.

Great for pinning into connectors (like Lucas on Ducati).

  14. Yes, if you've a terrible understanding of electronics.... this will show you where the sparky bits are!

  15. motor trade yah bozo. 99.% test light in conjunction with a voltmeter 1% ohms meter. cant mind the last time i used an amps clamp.

  16. I see that you’ve set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public.

Never I hope..... it's used to measure AC current... (may be on the generator output if you could access the single conductors).
Surely all spanners know how to use a 3 channel scope these days?

  17. I’ve got a brilliant device for detecting current without actual contact but it’s 240v
Can you get something similar for 12v?
Hardly essential but could be handy...

  18. There’s posh...

  19. Yep it was used by spanners back in the days when rainbows were black and white.

  20. They give false positives and more dangerously false negatives.... be careful.
