My Take On 996/1098 Mongrel Build!

  1. Ouch...

  2. How didn’t you get these for nothing??? Are there any more going??

  3. They were effectively beyond ecconomic repair compared to the costbof buying a 2nd hand good set. The lad has put showa's on but is going to get some öhlins cartridges, so I may be sble to swing a deal on that thru my öhlins mate.
To be honest I was expecting them to have been folded in half after seeingvthe frame.

  4. Ot a lot to report of late. One small thing that needed doing was modding the swinarm to be able to adjust the rebound properly. So drilled hole and slotted the casting to enable access to the adjuster.

  5. Something I do need to do though is look into the prospect of getting it mapped properly.
At the moment it is 1098s motor running off the 1.6 ecu using an eprom chip from Tom. It also has a pc3 that is running a zero map.
The guys that have been down this route before, who did you take the bike to for the dyno/mapping?
I may be able to get it done out here in germany but I may just bring the bike back to the uk in the winter if it proves a better choice.
What sort of time/cost was it to get it done?

  6. Speak to smaltmoto in Peine near oschersleben, the owner Konstanine has done this tuning a few times, I actually already have a PC5 converted to run on the 996 hardware by him.
If I can put you in touch with him let me know

  7. I love it when people do this sort of thing to bikes. Modding and switching stuff around. Well done to you!! Nice work

  9. Well it's been a while since an update. Mainly due to having no computer but just an android phone that would not load pics to the forum.
Anyway, spent some time in the uk for nov/dec so gathered a few bits n bobs. Main thing was some machining from FE. Winter plan is/was to fit the FG016 forks and do some other tidying up of stuff. Picked up a ratty old front mudguard from a gen 1 rsv100 that I stripped the paint from and made good. RSV gen 2 looked wrong to me as too angular so went straight for the gen 1
well the forks are in. Main issue involded was to hope my measurments all added up correctly and that the pieces would fall into place. Had FE machine an axle and some spacers up. Got a mate of a mate over in Belgium to machine the bottom yoke to 56mm from the 53mm that was standard for the showas. The FG016 is 51mm top so that was just a case of sleeving it down from the 53mm. ONly snag that I had forseen was that there may or may not be space for the speedo drive. Looked at various options and decided to put a gps speedo on the bike in place of the original (Glass was starting to crack anyway).
Also finally got around to finishing the undertray. The pics are of it in an unfinished state but overall I am pleased with the result. Not perfect but I can see where to inprove next time. May look into the idea of making some mouds next winter to maybe have a goat at making a fairing in carbon.

  10. Small update. A good friend has started a workshop buisness of his own. Primarilly car related stuff but he is a keen biker and owns a couple of Ducati's. So yesterday he and I made a start on the rear half of the exhaust system.
He admits his welding is not quite up to as he is way out of practice and familiarising with a new setup minus pedal. Looks ok compared to my pigeon shit style of welding. Gonna finish the job maybe tueday so will post pics when done.

  12. Right, a long time since I did an update so it may be a bit hotch pitch and out of order.
I’ll skip the fine details and try and keep it simple.
So last posts were st about the time we sorted out the exhaust. Of which I have a choice of sort of cored out stock cans, for when I want to make a noise. I also have a set of stock 848 cans which have been adapted slings with the noisy pipes to be a simple slip on arrangement secured to the pipework via springs.
Of the two sets of pipes I generally run the 848 cans as the bike is used in Germany mainly and they are not too keen on the loud bit. Only downside is that the area above the cans where the cat lives gets hot enough to damage the carbon undertray that’s made. So a simple application or two small sections of motorsport heat shielding to the underface of the tray sorts that.
Other jobs I wanted to revisit was the airbox as being single piece it’s a pain to remove and strip down if needed. So I have now made it two piece. I need to do a bit of tidying of it this either and create a flanged seal between the two halves. Also earmarked is a few tweaks to the wiring loom to again facilitate component removal with less complications.
Last winter my main goal was to make my own cf fairing. A lengthy and messy process that entailed making good and preparing my old gf fairing to be used as a plug for making moulds. Then after more prep using the moulds to wet lay cf to create the new fairing.
Obviously it was not quite production quality but it weighs less than my very flimsy gf fairing and it’s been a challenge.
There has been many other bits and pieces that I’ve done along the way.
I’ll chuck some photos up for you to see.

  19. The seat unit I picked up very cheap as it was damaged. So repaired and strengthened for my use.

  20. How stiff are the injector mounts? I wondered if they might bend at full chat, or in fact if they vibrates with the engine running.
Did you try on a dyno with the tank off to see what happens?
