Warm up I always let my GT1000 warm up while I sort out a few bits and pieces before riding off. Just takes a few minutes and I asked a technician if this was a good idea and he thought it was.
Older engines run roller bearings in the head , later ones have plain bearings . Start one of these engines without the rocker covers on and see how much oil comes out in 90 seconds . I assume you think none will appear for 89 seconds . If the oil pump can't supply enough oil 5 seconds never mind 90 second then the plain bearings in the head would be the fist things to f up . Even turning the back wheel with the plugs out to check that you've not messed up a belt change results in oil reaching the head (that's 2 or 3 revolutions ) . How long does it take for the oil pressure light to go out ? Perhaps Mr Spalding thinks you should take the rocker covers of and oil the cams before start up , or have a manual prime pump ( see latest ducati corse accessory attached) If rocker damage was a Start up issue then why would the 748 be more affected than the 916 /996 . Warm up times seem more related to personal ritual rather than any hard facts ( my own ideas included ! ) I like my neighbours and live in an urban environment ,usually have loud pipes, so ride off ASAP , never had any mechanical problems related to warm up on any of my 20 plus ducatis .
I ride 5 miles before the damn temp gauge registers 50, thats AFTER letting her warm up while I lock the garage put my helmet and gloves on etc etc, really pisses me off.
If I didn't let Dizzy warm up for 5 mins she would always stall Better five mins than dropping her on the floor
Always....even if only whilst I put me lid and gloves on. There's some truth to the oil feed question on the desmoquattro heads. It's not the pump capacity, it's the small bore pipe that feeds them. Cold oil is slow to get up there and follows the easier route in the oil delivery system into the crank feeds. Bearings etc are fine but its the rockers that take a hit. Letting the bike warm up at idle means they are cycling at 1000 rpm. Riding straight off means they get cycled at 3 or 4k....... The newer engines are using internal oil galleries now and feed much, much better. I still warm up though even if only for a minute or so.
Happened to me on my GT1000 when I rode it straight off after starting.Stalled just as I was leaving my driveway. We went over, little damage to lever and bar end,big damage to my pride.I always give my bikes a little warm up before riding off now!
Wouldn't have helped in this case-I was only just moving and turning as well. You live and learn though!
Awww no :-( Best advice given to me start off with both feet off pegs Just incase Oh and warm your bike up and start her with clutch in Then I bloody loose her on a wet road when she tucked in front end under :-/
Unfortunately it was :-/ One written off dizzy One wounded ducbird But a year and half on A monster on the way and a return to two wheels yeahhhhhh Will still warm her up and use two feet
Loosen the oil feeds to the heads and fire up a 2 valve motor and see how long the oil takes to piss all over the motor. It won't be 90 seconds, I know this from experience......
My oil pressure light goes out pretty much instantly when it fires up, and that's only because its so quick to fire. If it had to spend more than about a second on the starter the light would probably be out before it fired up.
