  1. Has it been dropped? Big crack in the fairing by the indicator........

    AL

  2. forgot to 'watch' it so no idea what it went for...

  3. Just checked the auction, it went for £850

  4. What do you expect for £850?!

  5. Well knock me down with a feather if I didn't go and win it for £850. Had no time to go and see it so hope it has not been dropped, but looks in reasonable shape from the pics......but only time will tell.

Once I get my grubby hands on it I'll post some pics and also confirm whether that is a crack in the fairing or just a scratch, as the description says. So let's hope I don't regret buying unseen, but at that price it was worth a punt.

And in anticipation of doing some tidying up of the fairing, whch I ws planning to touch in rather than have completely resprayed; so does anyone know what spray paint colour is a good match for Ducati Red?

  6. If it starts, stops and runs fine you got a Bargain :upyeah:

  7. Yep that's what I thought. Apparently the belts were done last month and the MOT runs out in September, so all in all it should start, stop and run.

I can work on the bodywork and improve/replace anything else over time.

I'll get my mechanic friend down the road to give it a thorough check once I get it and see if there are any gremlins lurking......but hopefully not.

Best get myself some riding gear now!

  8. Next stop Desmo Due ;-)

  9. If you broke it you would get your money back......

Likewise, if you need bits and pieces, there are plenty of forum members that have got bits squirreled away....

But anyway.....Hycote paint....Ford Radiant Red on top of a Nissan Red 526 works quite well.....the Hycote blob on a stick in Ford Radiant Red works quite well for stone chips.

As soon as you have got it, get some photos posted and forum members will let you know what to look for.......start off looking at the petrol tank dent because that's right in an area where rust forms inside....

  10. Well done Afpu ! as said, can't go far wrong - an excellent starting point and at just the right time of year.

  11. looks like a decent bargain
    spot on :upyeah:

  12. Whooo hooo :-D
    Nice one

  13. Having spoken to the guy last night it sounds like a good one.

Firstly he assures me that the bike has not been dropped and was well looked after by the former female owner. It gets better. Her boyfriend worked at Moto Rapido and maintained the bike.

Apparently the tank was relined so should be free of rust......but a good place to start looking.

I will of course post pics as soon as I get it (her I should say).

  14. Thanks Arquebus......will those colours work OK if I am blending in, rather than refinishing a whole panel? But then again I suppose it depends on how faded the original panels are.

  15. On their own, those two colours (by Hycote paint) compared with the Ducati red.....Ford Radiant Red is a bit too dark; Nissan Red526 is a bit too orange.

However, on my bike, for a test, I painted one mirror in Radiant Red and the other in the Nissan Red.........in sunlight you can hardly see the difference.
My panels on my bike have been sprayed at different times and you can just see they don't all quite match until in sunlight, then they are OK...... it is quite hard too tell which are the OEM paint colour panels.

I used a 'dirty' red or grey primer under my paint coats.........I didn't try it with a white primer.

A whole panel sprayed with combination I mentioned, is very slightly noticeable until in sunlight and I also added a mudguard extender which was sprayed the same way.........You can't see the difference in colour against the OEM mudguard.

......but don't forget that if you are just touching up areas, you will have an overspray to clean up and that in itself will be noticeable.

Personally if you have minor chips to deal with, I would use the Hycote Radiant Red blob on a stick.........You may find that if it is a bit proud or messy, you will be able to use T-Cut to bring it down level and if necessary apply some more paint after.

The Hycote stuff is cheap enough so, it is worth having a can of each and a blob on a stick......

Test time for you, I reckon.

  16. Al - thanks - I need to touch up a couple areas in the short term, though the bike will need a respray at some point in the distant future, which I have no cash for at the mo.

Did anyone notice the bike was listed in the wrong section (parts and accesorries)? Probably why it went so cheap.

Reckon if it runs fine you got yourself a bargain.

  17. I should point out that I don't really know which panel on my bike is in the OEM Ducati Red apart from the front mudguard because that looks like a through colour plastic to me, so it may not be surprising that some of my patch-ups don't show particularly if some previous owner used Ford Radiant Red to spray a couple of panels..........

......sounds bad, doesn't it? Actually it took me about a year to spot the slight differences.

  18. yes I did - and added to this thread instead of a new one in the hope that O.P. would follow up on it. So a happy ending. i have used Radiant Red on about 5 Cagiva/Ducati fairings now and it's a 'luck of the draw' as to how well it matches depending on how old the existing paintwork is. I think it's a good average to start with and sometimes matches perfectly and let's face it, a great deal cheaper than getting a pro to do it! Looking forward to getting up to Wandsworth again this summer.

  19. AL, thanks for the useful advice from your experience. Might need more than the blob on the stick treatment for this bit:

I was expecting to have to blend this in, along with where I think I am going to need to repair the crack in the fairing:

But as you say the thing is to experiment and find out what works best.....if the worst comes to the worst I can take it down the local spray shop and get them to sort it out.

  20. yes - remember seeing the damage on the advert. Good news is, it won't fail an MOT on it:) Unless you have had any bike bodywork done recently I would make sure you are sitting down for the quote as it's a lot more labour intensive than general car painting (and that isn't cheap) I think it would be enough to cancel out the 'bargain' start you have got off to tbh. You could 'V' out that main crack from the rear and put copious amounts of Araldite on it for the time being - both of those areas could be sprayed/filled (chemical metal works well on outside face and is easy to mix/apply) fairly easily yourself if you have the eye for it.
