Not tried it myself , but the ratios are defo different. Do the brakes have decent feel? Stiiff/wooden?
You use a 17mm Master cylinder with the M50 because of the smaller pistons. A 19mm will be too aggresive and lack feel. I've just changed to a Brembo RCS on the BMW and even with the stock calipers (simliar to M4 ) and pads its made a huge difference. I didn't expect so much improvement with the stock pads in still. I've probably got some almosts brand new M50 from a Panigale R for sale. I bought them for my BMW but have since got a set of GP4RS which work with the 19mm master cylinder on the BMW. The M50 and the stock brembo master cylinder on the Panigale are easily the best brake setup I've ever riden. I'm not expecting a huge improvement with the GP4RS; it's just more convenient with the other gear that I have.
I'm sure there won't be issues, it'll all work I guess. But optimally? From what I'm told, the design principle is the m/c bore is matched to the caliper pistons sizes, to get optimum performance? (experts chip in) I asked about this as I have grown up with routinely adding a Brembo 19mm m/c on a variety of Jap4's over the years. So was surprised at the size of 1199 m/c.
I ran M50's on my 899 with no issues. I run a single M50 on my RRV450. Just fitted a 15RCS, yet to test it out
I’m no expert but after talking to Rick at JHP he assured me that he had done a few conversions and that it’s fine. Yet to do a trackday after having them fitted but have used on the road and have been fine
I’ve got m4 callipers 330 Brembo hpk discs, spacers and Brembo RCZ master cylinder for sale if your interested off my 899?
So what is the difference between the M4 and the standard callipers? Are the pistons not the same diameter?
I might be interested when my house sale goes through. Not expecting that to happen until the end of the month. Bob
If im honest I’m not sure on the pistons etc but all I can say is they make a massive difference As for a price I’m not sure but open to offers if you want to pm me
Just bringing this thread up again as I'm looking at upgrading the brakes on the 899 track bike. Would I be right in saying that the better value for money upgrade would be M50 calipers and RCS 17 MC along with some Z04 pads?
I was just referring to @Nelson's post about his experience. I personally am not very happy with the stock brakes either, but I'm going to start with just the pads first and then maybe the master cylinders. I'm kind of OCD, so I'll be changing both, the clutch and the brake together.
I'd try the 19mm M/C upgrade first. If still unhappy you can add M4's and they'd be ok with the new M/C. Z04 are good but V pricey! I use/rate TRW pads, (MCB856CRQ) need a lap to warm up, once warm are bloody ace!
I’ve got good brake lines, fluid and z04 pads. It’s an ex trioptions bike so pretty well spec’d and can’t really complain about the brakes, just looking for better as there’s not much left to upgrade
