999 (03-04) vs 999(05-06)

  1. is it just the area from the nut to the case centre or does it continue from the other side and down toward a mounting point. I can see the horizontal crack easily. but cannot tell it it is just laquer peel on the other area....it looks like it extends across the bolt hole and down over...
if so I wouldnt take the gamble as that looks substantial. possible worn gearbox bearings or accident stress damage or just bad luck...who knows ???? . is the engine /gearbox smooth and quiet. no knocks etc. until you can ascertain a cause I wouldnt trust it. if it drops its fluid on a bend after repair and causes you to have an off....!

    ebay is your friend

  2. If you look at the top picture you will see the crack travels all the way round, by the looks , Thats a major repair . I would look out for an engine as thats not going to repair very easily. It looks to have cracked right through the threads. To weld it it would have to be completely stripped down .

  4. I tried the bike today and the gerabox is working fine. The crack is from the bolt to the left and to right side as well. We will see how will be during the welding. I will inform you how it goes. Please wish me good luck as much as you can:upyeah: !

  5. Good luck with your repair . Are you a welder or do you know any ? . If I was to do this repair , which is highly unlikely , I would want the side casing clean with no hard ware I.E. completely stripped . I would mill out the crack , from the outside , I would then make a steel plate , approx 13mm . to bolt it to so that there is no distortion on cool down . I would then heat it to approximately 200c then I would TIG weld it . That said they are milled out in pairs so that the bearings are exactly inline . I dont think that it is a good idea to repair this . I would sooner put the money it would cost towards a replacement lump . I hope you didnt over pay for this . All the same good luck .

  10. Hi Phill boag,
how much you want for it?

  11. I pity the poor bstard who buys it after you've welded and no doubt respayed the engine to hide the problem.
If your keeping it for yourself and dont intend selling it with this issue, then fair enough ,but I would hope you'd have the good grace to inform the next buyer .

    Pete.
