Original Chain Life?

  1. Amen brother, Amen. This should be required reading for any rider contemplating replacement.

Noticed mine (OEM/chain) side plates are getting rusty/crusty already at 9000ks and it's well lubed with the Motul sticky stuff. Was about 5mm too slack until I sorted it yesterday.

Also spied the same site as you and will do the deal for replacement with them. I'll opt for the RK chain though. Great post brother btw.

  2. Think I will do the Scotland trip then check it carefully and decide if it's still in good shape before going into Europe.Scotoiler - Not a fan I'm afraid. Seems to splatter oil all over the place and not sure of the benefits VS good cleaning and lubrication. I use a chain wax and it does a really good job at staying on the chain.

  3. My o/e chain and sprockets need replacing having done 13755 miles; all with an e-scotoiler working away on an 11 plate MST. Quote from my local dealer for a new o/e set plus fitting was £390!!!! Found these guys online - JJC Race&Rally who stock bits for tin boxes & bikes. A DID X ring gold super heavy duty c&s kit (steel JT sprockets) from them is £186. Needles to say I've ordered a set.

  4. Hi Bugs....I may have the wrong thread here, but as I recall your chain looked like it hadnt seen any lube for at least 12000 miles :))

Not to detract from the seriousness of a broken chain at 120mph....but i am sure (IHO) if it was cared for slightly better, it may have lasted longer and perhaps given early warning signs before coming apart....

  5. Not if you've bought a replacement 14t front sprocket!!! Not cheap!

  6. BTW I've done nearly 14k on mine and the chain and sprockets seems fine....front 14t sprocket is newer and obviously hasn't done that mileage

  7. Re my earlier post above for a new C&S kit. I had an e-mail from Hayden at JJC Race & Rally saying that there were probs with my order! 'Too good to be true' sprang to mind. My DID super duper x ring was there but wrong sprockets had turned up. He rang supplier who had put a 'stop' on them!! No idead what that meant. Needless to say they (JJC) have come good and sent me the chain and a pair of AFAM steel sprockets. All for £185 so I can't grumble. They go on next week along with a 15k belt service; gulp.

  8. Could you let me know how it goes and what you think of the quality of the new chain/sprockets. I think I'll order in anticipation just in case I need to change upon return from Scotland. How bad is your old set?

  9. I think the consensus for a well-maintained, regularly lubed chain, with mainly road use is around the 20k mark. Also main problem is front sprocket.

I didn't clean nor lube my chain regularly enough, so it had to go at 15k. Hardly used Sport mode though. Mainly city commuting.

  10. Right here goes; update no. 2. Picked up C&S kit from courier from JJC. Opened it and inside......a C&S kit from AFAM!!!! Not what i'd ordered so e-mailed Hayden again. His reply; D.I.D. have withdrawn their X Ring Super Heavy Duty kit for the Mutley as it's not strong enough! Hence them sending me an AFAM kit with gold XS AFAM chain, sprogs are steel as well. All 530 pitch. It all goes on on Friday so will let peeps know after a few 1000 kloms to see if it's stretched. My old o/e chain was completely u/s after 14000 eScotoiler miles!

  11. Nowt wrong with Afam kit, I've used their stuff many times. Once you've got it on spend some time making sure the tension and wheel alignment is right; that'll kill your chain and sprockets quicker than any farting around with different brands of chain or lube. Again, don't go mad with the cleaning regime, it doesn't help.

  12. With a single sided swingarm can you adjust the wheel alignment??

  13. Sorry, I was forgetting about the single-sider. I'm old school, y'see...

  14. I replaced with DID chain and it is calk and cheese to the original. Replaced at 28,000 klms. THe DID has not been adjusted as yet , 8,000 k's and this is very different from the original which required quite a lot of adjustment in the begining and a lot in the end. I am replace chains and sprokets at the same time. Would not go 14 tooth for lower gearing but increase rear, as smaller Sproket increases chain forces !

  15. Well I have a 14t front sprocket and I cant see that the chain has worn any faster than normal - went to adjust it the other day after some time without and it barely needed any adjustment - done 14k miles so far - 22.4k kms

  16. Mine has just got to 18k miles and was looking a bit (a lot) loose, but when I adjusted it, I found a proper tight spot, so I've had to adjust to that - it is better (tighter) than it was, but I have a 1,000 miles to knock out this weekend. Got NO chance of changing it beforehand :(

I do have a new spring clip, 530 heavy duty, non O-ring, 110 link in the garage for my kettle, but I don't fancy throwing that onto the 1200!

Only ever had to change one chain (always traded up early) on an R1 which got to 20k miles - this one has rather crept up on me. May go for the extra rear teeth if available?

  17. I put a spring clip chain on the ST2, rode it to Germany and battered it round the Nurburgring. It was fine. Sure the Mutley has a lot more power, but it doesn't have any more sideways stress on the chain, as long as you fit it properly it'll be fine.

  18. 13k from mine. changed due to tight spots rather than lack of adjustment. Didn't think that was bad mileage from a large twin. regular lubing and maintainence is a must. Only got 10k from my old Tuono.

  19. nsm3 - Recommend you take some tools so that you can adjust it on your trip as when they start to go they really go fast.

Had mine changed last Friday at just over 16k. It had started needing more frequent adjustment so would not have been up for another long trip.

Very pleased with the Supersprox 42T rear sprocket, DID 530ZVMX-108 link chain, Afam 15T front sprocket and the 5% lowered gearing.

Good post on all the options and sources; http://ducatiforum.co.uk/forum/threads/alternative-530-pitch-rear-sprockets-for-the-mts1200.457/

  20. Kirky, I put the torque wrench, Fila C spanner and Profi-Lube in me top box straight after the adjustment, in anticipation!
