Honda 400/4 Rebuild

  1. Not wanting to cheap out (but this rebuild is going to go way over 1k i reckon) the motor has only done 6.2k - so they could be just rematched up or, while its apart...not worth the bother??
     
  2. Whats the worst that will happen, and how much is that?
     
  3. No idea at the moment...im still researching parts at the moment (in the dark as what to get) but a lad on the sohc forum has sent me a parts list that hes created...
     
  4. Mine had done 44k when I put the new main and big end shells in. Unless yours had had a hard life or or oil pump failure I would not think it needs doing.
     
  5. 6.2k and abnormally light usage....even once its back together it might get to 500 miles per year....
     
  6. But they’re out now. Something has to go back in and what’s the cost of new ones in relation to the whole project? If they’re and arm & a leg reuse the old ones, if not ..........

  7. You need to be very sure that you put them back in the journal they came out of otherwise the clearance will be incorrect.

  8. Well, just went back into the garage and while the journals in the bottom of the crankcase are out the upper ones are all in place (makes the job easier matching them up??)

  10. Ooh...might do..I've got the maintenance manual...how much do you want for it?
     
  11. Some plastigauge will help to check bearing clearances when you put it back together

  12. Nothing.....apart from an email address (It's digital and about 2Mb). Got the electrics manual and wiring diagrams too; plus the workshop manual supplement.
    Just PM me and I will email them.

  13. Frame and Swing arm down at the coaters (no pics yet). I needed to get them out of the garage to give me some room to get the hyper's sprag done and then the swing arm refurb on the z1000 done (zed going back together today) once thats done ive gotta go through all the 400 4 stuff and pick out more powder coating to take down when i collect the frame and swing arm...
     
  14. I had a CBX thou years ago and it knocked a big end out. I fitted new bearings throughout. You have to use plastiguage to measure the clearances of all the bearings. You cant just stick anything in
    If I remember correctly the bearings were either colour coded had a coloured dot on them or lettered
     
  15. TBH i dont think ill be rebuilding the engine (maybe but i doubt it) found a local engine builder that says if he has everything in front of him about 300 plus parts...which im ok with...however ill be sorting out all the cleaning, polishing and painting of it...
     
  16. Just some sorting out tonight. Frame and swing arm are back tomorrow, that gave me some room to sort out what ive got and get some stuff grouped in the right piles. Got a pile for chroming, a pile for powder coating and a pile for the engine internals....

  20. The rest of the bits and pieces have been dropped off. Yokes, brackets, footpeg hangers etc etc....should be ready next week. Although were in lockdown (first time ive been out since this time last week) the powder coating guy is struggling a little as i think hes a one man band so chucked him cash (skint myself, wife is now out of work) but ive got salary coming so trying my little bit to keep money moving....fork strip down tomorrow and then start polishing. Chrome platers have shut up shop til the end of this mornth and have a 2 month turnaround so ill drop all the chrome stuff of at the end of the month. Engine cases next..
