Timing Belts ... The Kiss Of Death

  4. Same as on the Porsche 928 V8....if spending big money changing that long belt it's prudent to change the water pump while in there!

  5. i refuse to do them now unless the full kit is fitted. i wont check em either. its do it all or not a tall.

  6. For a handy visual guide, the belt on the right was changed at the right time. The one on the left slightly too late.

  8. The handbook for my 907ie says the belts should be changed at 12,000 miles but makes no mention of time. This is dating from the early 90's and it seems that time between changes wasn't a consideration then. The previous owner bought the bike from the original owner when it was a couple of years old and had dutifully followed the service instructions in the manual. Consequently, when I bought the bike in 2012 at 29 years old and with 26,000 miles it had only had two belt changes in its lifetime.
    I do about 1,000 to 1,500 miles a year with this bike but now change the belts every 3 years. I'm sure they'd last much longer but why risk it?

  9. I think you are misunderstanding the desmo valve system @finm. They are actually much easier to turn over than a conventional valve spring set up because of the far lighter return springs. A desmo engine will run without any valve springs but the springs are there to enable easier starting and improved idling. The loads on a cambelt in an engine with conventional cams and springs will be much higher.

  10. I've had 3 belts snap over the years, Ford diesel...bent valves, Renault diesel....bent rods, and an 851....bent valves (15000 miles)

  11. I've seen a good few belts that failed , and plenty more in pictures , but haven't seen one that simply snapped ,
    without clear evidence of fraying or other physical damage , prior to the failure

    and not talking about Ducati belts in particular .... cars , belt-drive Harleys .... DAF Vario-matic anybody ?
    .... now that is a proper odd-ball of a transmission .... :bucktooth:

    smaller pulleys tho a fraction of the effort required to turn a desmo camshaft.

  17. Well jist bring them ower and they'll get din in nae time. Only 120 miles fae you fin, 30 mile closer than Ducati Glasgow.

  20. My only experience was a 2000s Capri that snapped a belt. Got away with it with nothing wrong other than the belt needing replacing. Was about 2k miles over the recommended mileage. On cars, I will always change on mileage.
