Seems to be a plethora of 916 knowledge on this thread so respectfully asking how to get hold of a race dash for a 2020 996 SPS that is in the mix for a bit of track performance goodies.
Theres a thing or cap on the crank which can come loose. Mine did. Fortunately only just and as it was in Snells for a Full Monty I had that done. I also had the swingarm concentric issue and I had that done too. Best mod on 916 for me was light mag wheels.
Agree on the lighter wheels, absolutely the best thing to do especially as the 3-spoke are so heavy. With regards to the oil gallery plug on the crankshaft, it could be an issue but requires a full engine strip to do it...
Thanks guys, there’s so much really good advice there, I’ll get sorting through it as we go. In the meantime here’s a couple of progress photos so far….
Thanks for that, really detailed experience that is something that I would really struggle to diagnose

i just did as already posted, starter leads, solenoid, clutch slave, battery, and that molex connector rhs of battery, 3 yellow wires that cooks from the stator?. direct soldered the connection.
I'm going through a similar process with my newly acquired 996. 1st thing I dealt with was the ergonomics/comfort issues. Helibars are a game changer and a Corbin seat means you can ride in semi-comfort! Other essential is to change out the standard REG/Rect for a MOSFET. Sourced mine from a 1200 Multistrada and fitted uprated Triumph leads. Picture shows reg fitted using standard heatshield, this has been subsequently modified slightly as it was fouling the fairing. Also fitted a MOTOBATT at the same time.
One last photo …. Who can resist a cliff top sunset beautiful bike shot??? Never rode a 916 before and what an experience! It’s so much smoother than I expected and has seamless power. Afull engine rebuild with only 6k miles, new suspension, brakes and tyres means it feels very much younger than it’s 27 years. And then there’s the exhaust note!! I’m in love !!
That's not a sunset, the Aliens have read the rave reports over the years on this model & are coming for your bike.!
More than happy Alan! Nearly looked you up last month. We were down at Mumbles and Caswell Bay from holiday cottage south of Lampeter.
