Exhaust collars off for cerakoting....hopefully back by the weekend, then should be able to get the exhaust on....Ill be waiting on the carbs after that....then its on to wiring...
Collars blasted - should be collecting tomorrow getting coated in gloss black...thought it might look nice inbetween the beadblasted engine and the stainless exhaust...
It will look great. I was wondering if you had seen the chrome version in the flesh (or on the metal) and decided against for some reason. I'm thinking that I may get my down piles down with it to stop any corrosion, whilst maintaining a similar look.
Yeah - ive seen the stock look...obviously thats how it was....the other factory was the cost of Chrome plating....for those 4 collars they wants upwards of 150....
Carbs now rebuilt. Hopefully ill be able to pick them up this weekend. Assuming i can that should pretty well complete the mechanical part - then im on to wiring. End of the month ill get the motogadget MUnit and wiring on order.
Lovely work! OMG, it sure does take me back: as a young apprentice I recall being on the back of such a machine doing all sorts of stupid runs at stupid hours, footpeg clipping the kerb of a bridge, interesting chassis gyrations etc. Funny, I always assumed some spindly tube frame, so seeing that pressed steel frame explains much!!!!
Well, its a bit of 2 steps forward 3 steps back thing.....back wheel has to come apart again as the oem spacers are mild steel so im in the middle of getting some Stainless ones turned out...
As the shocks are pretty knackered....rusted and chrome oem things...im thinking of going for a kinda "signature" upgrade to a set of Nitrons or something like that - not for any performance reasons - more the fact its the main bit at the back which youre eye is drawn to....
Not been in the garage for a while but ive got a day booked in for Sunday....got loads to do...clean the zed (the daily driver) which is caked in shite from the road (its been a wet one this week). Got the new stainless rear spacers to fit to the wheel, exhaust to fit and probably look at starting to get the Munit mounted somewhere although im not sure where yet... Electrical question: The engine is in...but im thinking im going to have to move it around a bit to sand off some of the powder coating on the frame so the motor gets a good grounding to said frame....am i right in thinking that...? i was going to remove all the engine bolts bar one, move the motor so i can get to the mount, sand it off, put a bolt in take another one out, move the engine again then sand another set of mounts so on and so forth... Yes? - i seem to remember having the same issue with the supermoto i built....
Just my opinion, rather than scrape off powder coating, I’d make up and run maybe 2 dedicated earthing straps. There must be a thread insert in the frame you could add a tab to. Andy
Thread insert 'y say....tell me more....! (just to say im all for not removing the engine again in any shape way or form)...its only a 400 but it does feel like its made out of pig iron...!
Exhaust fitted. Plugs and caps on...got some more electrical stuff to source before I start the wiring...I think the cerakoted exhaust collars look pretty good...
