Wrapping track fairings

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by MrAliT, Aug 5, 2013.

  1. Neither have I . I quite like the embossed look of the Ducati logo. Did you think about cutting the vinyl around it to make it pop out?

  2. Are the pics attached as well as inserted inline. I had this issue the other week.

  3. Im using a heat gun to soften the material where its needed to go over a curve (everybloodywhere). You can feel it get floppy and it flattens out and shrinks a bit when its heated....takes a few seconds thats all.

I dont have a spare tank and won't wrap it as its the aluminium one anyway....I might need to look into a spare when funds allow though!

I like the embossed look of the logo too so whilst you could cut round it and lift off the vinyl to show the original, I think I'll leave it....I can always change my mind later.

I'll have a look into those pics Matt. They were origionally added with my phone which always puts them in landscape.

  4. I have a spare, good price to you....

  5. @MrAliT

That's a cracking first attempt.....it does get easier...if the finger tips don't drop off first.

Patience is the only advice for anyone going to try it.

  6. Cheers Anth. Any advice for the air vents on the panels? Im a bit disappointed that the finish isnt better in the bottom corners. I'm thinking I might have to add a section to cover the inner section and up the sides of the sculpting...any better ideas?

  7. Looks great! Really impressive if this is your first ever attempt!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of it and a pic of the fairings on the bike.

  8. The lower fairings from the replica fairings are red. I was thinking I was going to wrap them in black like the Pani lowers but thoughts I'd try them with the red and see what they looked like. Quite nice but it might get confused with one of those Wilson Craig Hondas!

  9. Patience....quality wrap.....Patience.....dust free work area....Patience.....small hot air gun.....Patience.....practice....Patience.

There is an amazing difference in using quality wrap....it's soo much more pliable and surprising how far you can 'push it'.

Oh and did I mention to be patient......

  10. Yeah I think you mentioned patience in your original post somewhere :upyeah:

Im using Hexis which by all accounts is decent stuff. Its just getting it down into the scoop without it ripping or pinging back......maybe Im just not being patient enough

Im having a go at the nose fairing tonight with is going to be done in several parts.

  11. that's great work guys :)

Where did you get the brushed effect vinyl wrap from?

Oh, the logo embossed looks really good, definitely don't trim around it!

  12. Brushed effect is from Hexis Home. The only thing I'd point out about is that it has a 'grain' on it so it will appear slightly different if the grain is running in different directions on a piece......good stuff though.

  13. Right.......I did the tail section...and what a swine that was. Its not possible to do it in 1 big sheet (I don't think) so its made up of panels covered then cut to join. I'm happy with the result and like the way that the panels have a different direction 'grain' on them. It looks like they have been brush separately then assembled...probably hard to tell from the pics.

    What do you think?

  15. Bloody love em!

  16. Well the nose turned out to be about the easiest part so far! I'm not sure if it was easier or if I'm just getting better but it's turned out really well. At the moment its acres of silver but it'll tone it down a bit when I get the number boards on the nose and rear. Check out the composting bin in the first pic....just for you Char! :upyeah:

  19. This is looking great! Very impressed. Really like the red lowers with the Ducati logo, it looks very... eh... natural(?) Anyway, it looks like it works well and suits the shape of the bike. You're right too - some number boards and maybe a couple of tasteful decals will break up the silver a bit, while leaving the brushed aluminium effect as the base.

I would love to do something like this with some spare fairings... maybe some time in the future when money settles down a bit.

  20. Cheers chaps. In terms of cost, the wrap I got is good quality stuff and is a bit more expensive as it's a metallic finish and a little textured. It's £42 + Vat a meter and I got 2 meters which is enough as long as you don't make any massive mistakes! On top of that you'll need some cleaning fluid (basically a degreaser) and a few tools like Scalpel, squeegee and hot air paint stripper. I reckon this has cost about £150 in materials.

Time is a big investment though...... Luckily there's sod all on tele :upyeah:
