Alternative For Cast Iron Brembo

6mm and more latterly, 5.5mm thick disks have been derived from racing, as has the T drive. More and more sports bikes go to the track today which makes sense of fitting a more robust disc but for road use and especially for the bikes of the 90’s and Supersport generation in the 2000’s, 5mm is more than adequate IMO. dead simple....none of that bobbin shit...just one big springloaded circlip that holds the outer disc on...dead simple and you can easily buy all the parts individually....easy. And, theyre really fucking good as well!

 

They don’t look like cast iron to me.

 

Later 996 SPS discs are stainless steel and "semi-floating" I think only the early ones are cast iron and similar to the 851/888 SP models.

 

I understand Bike HPS offer a custom, one-off service for making brake discs for bikes. I was looking for some 320mm discs for my Z900RS, which I'm fitting RWU Ohlins to & they said they could make one-offs. No idea about the cost, but I'd like to think is would be only marginally more expensive than off-the-shelf stuff.

 

Wow - cool (no one ever listens to me) - ironically when i was at AP workshops last week after the engine rebuild Griff went out on it for a test drive, came back and said "fuck me those brakes are good!"

 

If you run proper serie Oro discs, they are really rattly when cold as there is a bit more play in the bobbins to allow them to still float when at nearer max temps. Personally that rules them out for me for any road use whatsoever as it’s super annoying but on track they would be fine.

as I probably said, I ran the entry level Brembo series discs and I think they are 5mm on my R1 and they were absolutely brilliant, it’s the quality of the metal also that helps, versus OEM stuff
