Confirming Bike Details With Ducati

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by ibgarrow, Mar 1, 2023.

  1. Thanks, Tom. As it just comes back with “999” I suggest this is simply a dressed-up ordinary 999 rather than the R The vendor has advertised.

  2. @ibgarrow, Thanks. If you are really interested, it may be worth checking if a friendly UK Ducati dealer would just tell you which model of bike that VIN conforms to, without asking them to divulge any further details?
Also, if the frame is from an "R", I would suggest you try to confirm if the engine is also an "R", and if the numbers are a factory match, which might be more involved, but I'm sure you realise all this.
    Good luck.
    Tom.

  3. A 999R frame will have a 2 hole mount for the rearsets.
Along with a removable, bolt in frame, in front of the airbox.
Also a bolt on exhaust bracket on the frame, behind the os rearset.

The 999R engine also has the 999 number, as it's a true 999cc. Other 999 will have the engine number 998.

  4. The VIN below is from a 999R Fila sold in 2022 through the Collecting Cars website:
    https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2003-ducati-999r-fila ;
which I entered into the Ducati recall check, and it produced the following result:
    VIN: ZDMH400AA3B007183 - Model: 999 R FILA .
The VIN you provided is: ZDMH400AA3B007422 .
As you can see the VIN's look quite similar, but I don't know what conclusion should be drawn from that? The result may provide some reassurance about the bike, but I recommend it should still be confirmed through an authoritative source linked to Ducati.
    Hope it helps,
    Tom.
PS. To make you aware, the VIN listed for the Fila bike started ZDHM, which I assumed was a typo that should be ZDMH, so I reversed the H & M, and it was accepted by the Ducati checker. However, it introduces an uncertainty about that number also. Caveat emptor!

  5. Sorry for thread resurrection/hijack.

My friend has just bought a 748 and the VINs on the head stock are:

    ZDM748S*xxxxxx*
    and
DGMxxxxx OM (also shown on a sticker on the frame as DGMxxxxx BOM

I can't find anything that matches - any ideas out there?

  6. @nelly was kindly able to help me with my 996S vin details

  7. VIN should be 17 chars?

  8. Yeah, every site I've tried says same, but that is all there is - I have a photo of the headstock to go by and am 100% that is all there is.

    V5 has same number.

    Has he bought something 'different'?

  9. ZDM748S*xxxxxx* Is the VIN, including the *’s. The older bikes didn’t have 17. Maybe a more recent standard? I don’t know.

  10. Thanks Nelly. It's a '98.

    As I understand it:

    Z - Italy
    D - Ducati
    M - Motorcycle

Then '748s', then the number (009004)?

  11. Normal 13 digit VIN from a mid/late 1990s non-US Ducati 748. I think I remember something about the DGM number being the homologation number for the type of bike (« OMologato »for « Approved »).

Here is an extract from the 1994 916/748 Workshop manual :

The 17 digits system was later extended outside of the US exports (1999, when TPG took over, maybe?) but the coding remained different between US and non-US bikes.
