Replacing 916 Frame

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by ibgarrow, Jan 7, 2024.

  1. If I have to import from Redfox, then hopefully they’ll have a similar certificate. If not, I’m ignorant of what comes next. Thanks

  2. Because it’s a 996 frame, and I want a 916. The bundle I’m considering already has a 996 frame included, but I want to end up with a 916, not a hybrid. If I can source a 916 frame with V5, I can install a different engine but still end up with a 916. Agreed, it’ll stand out to the cognoscenti but it’ll remain a 916.

  3. Further advice sought. I’ve been offered this as a 916 frame to import. Is this a correct VIN? I can’t input it into Ducati’s recall URL, which is where I get information from.

  4. This VIN doesn’t look legit to me at all.

  5. It actually looks manually stamped. Spaces between digits are uneven.

This is genuine 1996, for example : C381DBE3-4894-4F96-B185-8EA793B63A93.jpeg

  6. Yes. That’s what I was expecting.

  7. Defo manually stamped, on some numbers or letters you can see a rebound stamp where the punch has hit twice. Z and the 3 noticable.

  8. Hand stamped really sloppily?
Ducati have no record of it?
    Unashamedly rusty and crusty?
Then it can only be an early, and much hallowed (by some) Varese 916 frame worth ££££…
Should be bang on if the aim is to rewrite the history and increase the perceived value of a bitsa. :joy:

  9. I couldn’t enter this VIN into Ducati’s online recal URL, as it isn’t in the correct format.

  10. I believe the correct format is as per @Guillaume69 ’s post above, ZDM916S with an * either side of the 6 digit serial number.
It looks very suspect to me.
ps, I think Ducati’s recall checker by VIN only works for the more modern 17 digit VINs

  11. Can you get a frame made??

What other bits have you got already??

  12. There’s a full 916 with a Cat frame and engine with a hole in the sump. Another 916 engine (unknown condition), a 996 frame, and a variety of extra fairing parts.
I could get an h stamped frame but simply transferring the old vin would inherit the same “damaged/repairable” marker. I could transfer all the good bits to the 996 frame.
I’m considering having the damaged one repaired (Pierobon?) and trying to rescue the old engine…
But I might drop the whole idea.
There are alternatives out there. Possible ‘95 Varese frame and engine…

  13. I'd just buy a 916 if you want one mate

  14. I'd have to agree with Cookster, although the lure of a "basket case" may seem attractive due to it's cheapness, it's clearly opening a whole can of worms !!
At least if you but some half decent you'll know it's history & have all/most of the parts & know things like the correct cable runs, etc.

  15. A) I doubt I could outlay the £ outright for a decent 916
    B) I have a hankering for yet another ‘project’!

  17. Did you get to know him on a facebook IIR group? ;)

  18. Whilst I get what it is you want, it appears to me you'll never have the "clean" 916 you seek with the parts you have. Repair leaves you with the CAT N. Replace with new and same Vin leaves you with CAT N. Find a good 916 frame with V5 and the engine number won't match that frame. Ducati provide that information for owners so if I was to buy a bike as a classic to keep it's value and I considered paying top dollar I'd want matching numbers. Matching the numbers in the Ducati database that is.
So to my mind, you can't have this all clean original bike if your swapping frame.
