No, it’s a production 996bp. Registered something like 12 December 1998. Was one of the first in the country and the guy I put the order with pulled strings at the time to get it for me. still have it today and it’ll never be sold. the number of times I’ve had dealers questioning the year because on their parts systems the 996 didn’t come out till 99.
Just for general understanding and better clarity of this forum. There never was a “1998” 996. The 996 was introduced with model year 99, even though the first ones were produced and sold in late 1998 (like it seems to be the norm in the automotive industry). 1998 was the last year of the 916, with the new TPG graphics replacing the Cagiva script. In other words, if you take a look at the 1998 Ducati catalog, you won’t find a 996 in it. I hope this helps.
Did a bit more yesterday afternoon, first on the list, remove the broken fixings from the rear of the dashboard assembly Tried gripping the edges with pliers and mole grips, not happening, recharge the drill batteries, drill them, and stud extract them, using one of the very few Snap-On tools that I own, an extraction kit (was given, not bought, I'm not that rich ) Next job was easy, refit the new fittings, all ready to refit to the bike, once the headlamp bracket has been repainted Now, on to the kickstand, it has had the suicide stand delete modification done, but, the incorrect plate has been used, as such, when the stand is put down, the plate is catching the lower fairing, stand removed, needs a bit of a clean And after.... Looks like the footplate has seen better days though Need to finish cleaning the mounting bracket and springs, then order the correct return plate before refitting
You might want to upgrade to the 1098 side stand - the standard one (especially once worn) gives a nerves inducing degree of lean and wobbliness! Nice project - following with interest!
Got the new key cut today, what a faff that was I bought a new key blank from Ducati Coventry on Saturday, phoned a few locksmiths today, to see about getting it cut, it appears that if they don't supply the key blank, they don't want to cut it
Used to be a place on Rugby Rd in Hinckley that would cut anything you took in, Mike B locksmith I think it was called .
I had that issue. None of the high-street brands would touch it... Even though I had all the ducati paperwork to show it was a genuine blank and my registration and ID etc... Had to take it to a little local place in the end and they just rolled their eyes and did it in 30 seconds flat.
They were the first place I called, and refused It's not the first time I have had issues there, they once told me that they could not supply and cut a key for a Saab car that I owned, as they could not programme the chip, I told them it didn't have a chip, he argued that it did Eventually, I showed him a picture of the key, and asked him to show me where the effing chip was He just walked away flapping his arms
That’s a shame he’s cut quite a few keys for me when I lived that way, wonder if it’s under new ownership now
(Don't want to hijack the thread but when was that? All UK Saab keys since 1995 have had chips following the EU directive re immobilisers.)
