I’ve also got a ‘99 996 Monoposto. It has the steel subframe with pillion peg bracket mounts, I think that’s how the Billy Basic models left the factory. The only alloy subframes I’ve seen have been on SP, SPS models. My old 851 SP3 had a lovely aluminium subframe too.
That sounds strange to me. Seen several 94-95 original mono 916 stradas that had a single subframe, with no pillion foot peg bracket mounts). For me, a mono seat on a bi subframe has always been a tell tale sign of a “wannabe” mono… Which, by the way, I never really understood. Biposto are as beautiful as monos, and come in very handy when your riding buddy’s Japanese bike gets foocked. Which tends to happen. A lot.
You are of course correct, the genuine Ducati parts catalogues for all the 916s clearly show different subframes for Monoposto/Biposto versions. The 1999 996 Monoposto catalogue is laid out the same and is also the parts catalogue for the Biposto. There are individual pages for either seat unit, only one page for the subframe/inner guard/pillion peg gubbins. The alternative Monoposto subframe was no more, other than the pretty aluminium ones on the SP/SPS.
Just to throw some difference into the mix. MY2000 US 996Ss came with aluminium monoposto frames, 1 seat. No pillion accessories (basically SPS spec but with 996 engine) - so it's not as simple as "all 996s had pillion kit"
Got a bit more done today, decided that, for now, it is going to be a quick refresh, to see what parts are needed, and what needs some tlc First on the agenda today was to finish off fixing the youngest sons aprilia, new parts ordered last week, delivered during the week, fitted today, and fully rebuilt, was a pig to start at first though, but, it eventually fired up Once that was done, get it out of the workshop, clean the table, spilled some petrol and some 2 stroke oil, didn't want it getting on the tyres, then get the 996 back on the table First job, sort out the kickstand, a previous owner had fitted an anti suicide stand bracket, unfortunately, it was not the correct one for this bike, new, correct piece ordered from the Bay of Fleas, arrived within a couple of days, fitted today Old bracket... New bracket Next on the list, refit the clocks to the headlamp holder, forgot that the headlight relay bracket fixes to one of the clocks screws Got all the wires connected, went to fit the headlamps, need to disconnect the wires, affix the block connectors to the headlamp frame, reroute the cables and reconnect the plugs Refitted the scabby/broken airbox, replacement has been arranged, and the air intake trumpets Sure there should be an O ring on there.... Need to order some more parts, will be calling Jason at Ducati Coventry in the morning That's all for now, more to follow next weekend, unfortunately, I work away all week, so, I don't get the time during the week
Yes, there is suposed to be an O ring on the inlet trumpet to seal it in the throttle body. Use a smear of grease to help it fit in and pull out.
The other trumpets has the o ring, but, there is a cut in it, replacement parts have been ordered, hopefully, will be collecting Saturday
Trip over to Ducati Coventry this morning, new parts collected today, 4 new indicators, 2 new O rings for the air intake trumpets, and a new gear selector lever rubber Hopefully, will get around to fitting them tomorrow, and getting the bike looking like a bike again
Got a bit more done today, first on the list, clean up the throttle bodies and the trumpets ready to fit the new O Rings, one ring was missing, the other was damaged New rings fitted, nice and easy, plus, the new ones are green, so you know they're good Rings lubricated to make fitting the trumpets easier Next on the list, fit the new (old stock) full clutch cover, complete with new seal, the previous clutch cover was a hideous looking open cover, and the rubber seal was all perished Whilst in the area, I noticed that the neutral switch (?) Wire, has the plastic plug missing. According the the parts catalogue, the neutral switch has 2 wires, whereas, the one on the bike only has 1 wire Looks like the 'bodge-it and scarper' brigade has been here before, it has the battery clamp mod retrofitted The next job, fit a new gear selector lever rubber, the old one was missing Next was to start refitting the air intake tubes, and the body panels Right side air intake, pretty straightforward, left side air intake, not so...... Someone saw fit to reroute one of the coolant lines, the one that runs between the two expansion tanks, and had run it on the outside of the frame, thus, causing issues refitting the air intake tube, ended up removing the trumpets and the airbox again, to get to the clamp, and remove the pipe to route it the correct way, once all back together, the air intake went on pretty easily With those fitted, next was the nose cone and mirrors, took a few minutes to get it lined up, but, all good in the end That was enough for today, had to go out and try and teach the youngest son how to ride a geared bike, after he did his CBT on a rev and go shitter
Thought I would give it a start, just to make sure I had the fuel lines on the tank the right way round Got to love the V (L) twin sound
Well, the 996 is almost back together, just the main side fairings to refit, I decided to take advantage of the sub-zero temperature this morning, and get it out of the workshop, over the frosty grass, which has been waterlogged for the last month Had it sat on the patio, ticking over nicely, getting it warmed up, for a potential test ride later today, until it decided to take a pee all over the patio Once it had cooled off, I disconnected the cooling fan, and tested it with jumper wires direct to the battery, fan works fine Just having a coffee, a sulk, and a rethink for my next check for the issue
Some of your coolant hoses clamps look rusty and pretty shitty. May be check the rubber underneath for cracks (and replace rusty clamps while you’re at it) ?
