Not back pedalling fella. But it looks like you are. I sometimes think people can actually see the bigger picture without being prompted. Obviously I was wrong.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention Stu, checked mine can't tell if its thread locked but agree poor design, will deffo keep an eye on it.
It is not immediately obvious from the pictures what I am looking at, and my bike is several hundred miles from where I am sitting but thanks for the heads up, I will take a close look at the area when I see my bike next
Quite important issue i would say, thanks for the heads up, I think everyone should check theirs pronto. JB
Someone else had this a couple of years back, coming out of a petrol station, not sure if there is a still a thread somewhere. a few of us have had the kill switch replaced (in my case after the thing cut out at 80 on the fast lane twice and I had to coast to the hard shoulder across 4 lanes). Ducati position was to apologise but these failures were attributed to a part failing and not the overall motorcycle condition in other words in most cases the issue would not repeat itself, which I think will be their reply to your case. Some people especially the yanks sometimes will pursue it and may get a 'factory' recall issued at best but most of the time, its easier to pay off a bereaved family/party than to do recalls. I think that's why its good to share the experience on these forums and how ducati head office or the dealership deal with your case, which is little satisfaction to getting the message out at least - we all know of plenty of issues that are common, may be dangerous or at least expensive that have not turned into recalls but have kept us informed and able to get them fixed, and ducati have done their part by in general acting in a consistent manner through their dealer network. bugs
I would be interested to hear what Ducati have to say about the failure and whether they issue a memo to the service centers to check as a matter of safely
Given that it is on mine, I would presume yes. I can't remember if it's done at the factory or not. Given the way it was marking up the spring plates I can't believe it wasn't observed/heard/felt before the final lock up came though.
I agree it obviously would have been working its way loose for some time and from the marks had been rubbing surely this would have felt like a flat tyre or headstock bearing problem and even just looking at it you would see somethings not right
An update on this thread now I'm back home and on the laptop. Bike is at my supplying dealer which is M&S Motorcycles in Newcastle Upon Tyne who are as always first class. While I was in M&S Motorcyles I looked at various used and new Multi's from 2010 with 27k to new 0 mile examples, none show evidence of any type of threadlock. The Diavel by the way has "Hands Free" locking but has a "Lug" cast onto the underside of the top yoke. Just in case anyone hasn't followed the previous threads or may have been distracted by the "Trolling" from certain people here is a full explanation with pictures. The first image shows a view looking down at the tank, the small hole highlighted is the threaded hole where the metal boss is screwed into from underneath. The second image is a closer view of the threaded hole, when the boss is in place this hole just looks like it has a silver rivet in place. The third image shows the actual metal boss as viewed from the side. The last image shows the wear on the "Hands Free" locking mechanism. This can obviously only be viewed when rhe bars are turned either direction. It also shows the position that the "boss" dropped into to lock the steering. Some people on here mentioned the feeling of flat tyre or head bearings, yes I did feel that when I slowed to filter through traffic in a traffic jam, remember these bars are big and wide with a lot of leverage. If I had just been merily barreling away down the motorway and had to take avasive action or take a slip road then you wouldn't have made it. The if's, where's and whyfores don't matter, it happened, end of. You can check this by using your fingers "just" but you cannot get a tool underneath to check if it's tightened correctly or to re tighten it. You can either read the trolling bullcrap or get your bike checked your choice your life. Just to add about me, I've been riding and repairing motorbikes since I was 14, never been without one and never will. Worked in or allong side the automotive industry all my life. I work on the latest generation of electric vehicles and all manor of plant equipment. Plenty of good people on here but also plenty of know nowt nob ends also, you decide. All the best Stu
Read your thread again. You were making claims and threatening legals before telling people what it was all about. Sounds like trolling to me.
Thanks for the comprehensive update Stu, I am off to check mine now. M&S are a sound bunch. I am sure they will get to the bottom of it. As a matter of interest were all their secondhand stock OK. as my 2011 may well still be in the showroom? Jimmy
You really need to read the original thread correctly, or would you like it breaking down so it's easier to understand ?
I love people with their heads shoved firmly up their own arses. Do you enjoy the view? ps. I'm glad that you didn't die nor ruin someone's reputation with your wild claims
OOOh sticks and stones  Anyway, soon as I have any feedback I'll post for those who are genuinley interested. Loads of nice clean stock in M&S Jimmy !
+1, after 17k miles mine doesn't appear to be going anywhere, but a) what a crap design and b) it is a lot smaller and less accessible than it appears in the photos. Feel like wrapping insulating tape around it now!
Or top yoke off, drill it and put a grub screw in to secure it, or more simple thread lock but the top yoke would still need removing as access as you have seen is near impossible. See what Ducati come back with, I'll keep people informed.
I think that this is an issue that we should all appreciate being informed of. Cheers! It proves the value of this site and others like it. I think that some of the more "emotional" comments provide some entertainment for the rest of us and only adds value for me.
Intersting and informative post. Mine seem fine but will be looking at it from time to time. There are some very opinionated people on this site who have an uncanny knack of being out of step with the vast majority.
