Strewth, where do I start! I used the original top yoke and had it milled out to take the larger diameter forks. Shimmed out the lower clamp! My cousin gave me a 916 front wheel. I built a Speedo drive from two items taken from later models. One from a 95-98 model SS and a 748 series bike. That took a bit of working out! I've got all the bits if you want to negotiate
Looks like that kept you busy sorting it out, Going to Keep mine original was curious how it was done,
I know how it goes, it all adds up that's partly why it took me 12 years. I did find the brakes a real pain to bleed. I ended up taking them off and elevating the calipers. Again I had trouble setting carb mixture. I set at 3 / 3.5 turns out and fiddled about around that mark with no joy. I then read up on what a lean and rich mixture did. Then I adjusted until I got a decent throttle response with no pops, spits or lag. This ended up about 5 / 5.5 turns out. Throttle response is good, plugs look a bit rich but not too bad. What's the carb syn like? Regarding speedo drive, I bought a couple thinking they looked the same. They ended up having different part numbers & ratios I think it was something to do with the front spindle diameter. Cheers Gaz
Hey Gaz, is that the stock carbs? I'm running FCR 39s. They're balanced ok. They've always run rich, too rich really. I might try a different jet size. I'm curious as to why I can have spongy brakes but bind a little at the same time. Calipers are freshly rebuilt. I'm not a 100% convinced the master cylinder is in good fettle!
Sorry yes stock carbs. Regarding brakes, are rotors central in the caliper housing and not rubbing on caliper body. On one side mine was slightly off center of the recess but still clear. If calipers are rebuilt they should move OK, are the discs straight / flat? Is it a constant slight rub of discs on pads or intermittant? I refurbed my brake, seals were OK but I took it to bits and polished the bores with 2000 wet & dry and buffed. I use a piece of dowl with a slot cut in the end to take fix the Wet & dry and put it in a drill. It polished up nice and brake cylinder has been fine. I ended up buying a double banjo with bleed nipple in the end for the master cylinder, not sure how much it helped. Cheers Gaz
I noticed the other day that the R hand caliper wasn't centred over the disc. I also deduced that it it's the R hand caliper that's binding. I've solved the centering issue, but it's still binding. The L hand pistons in the R hand caliper were hard to push back in. Looks like I'm going to have to pull the caliper apart and give it some Gaz treatment. I realised today the the L hand carb fuel screw was wound out +++ times!!!. Not sure how I missed that! I've set them both at 3/4 turn each as per Brad Black. Running much better.
So, I've solved the binding issue. I pulled the calipers apart and rebuilt them. I rebuilt them about a year ago, in preparation for building the bike. I forgot to soak the seals in oil when I did this! I reckon they didn't like sitting dormant on a shelf for a year. Anyhow, all moving freely now. The brake is still really spongy. I'm going to put the original coffin type master cylinders back on. Only I don't have the brake anymore!!. Anyone got one they're willing to sell?
I've finally saved enough money to have the rest of the bike painted. I dropped the parts off this morning.
The picture is the 'before' photo. I only dropped them off today. 8 month lead time!! And it's not coming back red!!!
The paint dude rang me this morning, he has started prepping. 4 months ahead of schedule! Exciting times.
