1098 Cannot Cancel Error Code

  1. current fault

  2. I’d maybe suggest to the mechanic he needs a more extensive diagnostic computer. It should, at the very least, be able to tell him which circuit has the fault to save him (or you) checking everything.

Coming back to your original post, do you have a wiring diagram? Error 38 is a short circuit or open circuit on the CANbus network. This is the network the dash and ECU use to communicate with each other. If it’s good it should have 3.5-5v across it, if it’s not got that then it’s earthing to ground somewhere. Assuming you’ve fixed the problem with a low battery voltage I’d start there.

  3. its not a ducati diagnostic computer, but he said it would work ok on that bike. i can try another mechanic that has diagnostics and see if it can pinpoint a faulty circuit. i,ll check the handbook for a wiring diagram. thanks.

  4. tested the stator and the ohms reading is 0.00 . i will be removing the casing to double check that the stator has burnt out .just waiting on my puller tool to arrive . can you recommend a good stator at a reasonable price. massive range in prices from £41 to £191.

  5. Before you do that, when the bike is running, what DC voltage do you have across the battery terminals? It’s easy enough to measure with a multimeter.

Don’t overlook @nelly ’s post at #11 above, a faulty charging circuit won’t throw the error code you have. Whilst one would expect to see a very small resistance across the terminals of the stator output cables rather then 0.00, you’re now insinuating there’s a charging fault which wasn’t mentioned before and may, just may, be a red herring in your search to get rid of the 38 error code. You may not need to spend the money you’re now anticipating spending.

  6. thats the main problem i have, i cannot start the bike to test the DC voltage because the error code will not allow the bike to start. if the stator has been fried, maybe that is why the error code has appeared. i will be removing the casing to look at the stator before i buy a new one.

  7. thats the one i have ordered from aliexpress , £1.90 in a sale. rather than paying 2 x p/p and their time rewinding it. i would rather buy a new one at a reasonable price. thats why i asked for a recommendation on stators. thanks for the reply.

  8. Check the stator by all means but if you do have an issue with the stator it won’t stop the bike from starting it just won’t be recharging the battery.

Id wager the reason your bike won’t start is because the ECU is not permitting it because of the canbus error. @chrisw detailed for you (on the other forum) all the sensors/actuators that are on the canbus plus of course there’s the dash and ECU themselves. Your diagnosed open or short circuit indicates something on the canbus is faulty (the stator and r/r are not on the canbus). It’s necessary to find out which it is. To do so you need to find a mechanic who has a diagnostic computer which can tell you exactly which sensor it is, or you need to test every single thing on the canbus network by removing them one at a time and measuring the voltage over the canbus network until you find the sensor which is causing the voltage drop which is what’s triggering your code 38.

  9. thats what the bike mechanic said with the non ducati diagnostics, test everything separately . i will try and get it tested on something that can pinpoint the fault. cheers.

  10. See if any local motorcycle mechanic has Texa (and keep it up to date), that will identify the guilty sensor.

  11. it was a TEXA that was used and i was also told that all the local mechanics use texa as well.

  12. :(
Maybe it’s not updated? Who knows. All I know is my version gives more info than that.

  13. does this stator look ok ,or should i replace it. discol IMG20241130154129[1].jpg IMG20241130154332[1].jpg IMG20241130154349[1].jpg oured on one side

  14. i,m getting 0.6 at all 3 wires with the multimeter set at 200 ohms

  15. That sounds right

There’s a short video here on testing the stator and r/r for anyone reading this post in the future

  16. @RAY WYNN do you have a copy of the workshop manual? If not, DM me your email address and I’ll send one via WeTransfer.
