BMW twin turbo v8. After realising bmw main dealer mechanics are baffled by anything more than an oil change i decided I can do a better job. This last year I have diagnosed and repaired canbus problems, failed charge air coolant pump, failing air suspension, and high pressure fuel system problems. None of which the stealers could deal with.
Think most dealers just want to plug in a computer and charge you for the honour and not even fix the problem, they're just getting lazier. Where i'm working they had to send in a sprinter chassis cab as it was throwing a fault on PDI, 3 days and £1500 later they misdiagnosed the issue and that was without fixing a pinched wire. It took a freelance auto electrician 3 hours to find the fault, with just a multi tester.
Yep, tech only seem to be able, or perhaps are only allowed, to follow a proscribed flow chart when debugging a fault. Replace wire A, is fault still there, replace connector B, still there, replace part C etc etc. I had similar with an ABS fault light that turned out just to be a build up of brake dust on one of the wheel's speed sensor.
