What about fixing all the affected 790/890 engines in bikes in the warehouse? They know they have an issue with the oil supply causing cam failures, unless it’s genuinely only a small bath isolated (which they haven’t confirmed) are they just waiting for the customers to find the issues?
That's normal across any brand first service at 620 miles, then whatever the service intervals are or every 12 Months whichever come sooner.
Mine did 11K no issue, others were worn before that kind of mileage. It's a small batch that were affected, KTM claim it was cured by the 2020 models {mine was a January 19 registered bike} but riders of later registered bikes were having issues too. But that may well be due to how they rotate stock bikes in the warehouse maybe? They wait only manufacturer that i'm aware of that have done preventive recalls on engines is Ford on a batch of RS Focus cars. Honda didn't do anything other than hand out oil additives back in the 80's with their VF engine when they had camshaft issues. At least KTM have stated that any 790 affected by the oilway issue will be repaired FOC. I had an e mail from KTM direct stating that they'd repair my bike should the top end wear prematurely, forwarded it to the shop who took it in as PX they sold it eventually at a loss.
Its all a shame. I was anticipating the 990 engine being fitted to the SMT some time soon, which would be perfect for here. Would be very wary of being stung by KTM again though. Had a bit of a chew on getting my 1290 sorted under warranty just before they hit the buffers, and KTM France after sales and recovery is/was already shocking in terms of service. The last thing I expected was trying to justify my guarantee and warranty when stood broke down at the side of the road! No records available to the break down people (contracted out..) to see if covered. Trying to find receipts for servicing in emails on my phone to send them…not an experience I would want to repeat.
That’s poor. I’ve just been given 1 years breakdown assistance free when mines was in for a service, told me everyone getting their servicing done at KTM is getting it, but guess it’s limited to a certain age of bike
Mine had the 4 years warranty when I bought it last year. Along with ‘free’ packs and a reduced price. Sounded great… It is all about how problems are dealt with, or not. Once KTM recovery decided they would collect me and the bike from the side of the road, it then took close to 3 months to get sorted. If it breaks down again it may get left at the side of the road in the hope that it ‘disappears’.
I've got a 390 Duke and the plan was a 790 Duke next in a few years time. Ducatis were considered, but the 790 Duke is around half what I would be paying for a Ducati. I am unfamiliar with the issue. Does it affect the 790 engine? Should I just give it a "oh, feck it " and get a Ducati?
The 390 is assembled in India, not sure if that is assembled from parts made in Europe or parts made at the factory in India. Don’t think the 390 had the same issue. Andy
Well I will keep a watch out. I need little excuse to buy another Ducati and it could coincidence with hell freezing over and me actually getting my compensation - but no expectation no
I've got a cool alternative new bike idea! I am not saying as I don't want it tracked (Mr Paranoid still believes that I am being monitored - no matter where I post!) but I can get it from Fowlers. The plan is to still hold on to the Duke for a few years, as I don't want to blow any savings. I just dunno how long I will have to hold on for. My solicitor can't get paid, despite the other side saying that they would pay her fees when we settled, so I am not hopeful that we are dealing with honest people. HANG ON! AN INSURANCE OUTFIT? HONESTY? MY BRAIN DAMAGE AND EXPECTING AN HONEST INSURANCE COMPANY? if anyone can guess, I will be impressed. Especially as Fowlers sell everything apart from Ducati! Oh. and assorted weird, expensive stuff like MV Agusta!
To put you all out of your misery waiting to hear it is this: Husqvarna 801 Svartpilen. I must of walked past one in Fowlers (maybe) and it did nothing for me. Yet it makes sense. It is light enough and powerful enough. It is based upon the KTM 790 engine, but slightly different in detail. And as I've never owned a Husky before, another manufacturer is ticked off the list. You can get factory extras for it, but I'll wait and see. I am not sure if I will p/x my KTM or just keep it. Garage space could be the issue as I have no desire to get rid of a Ducati. Nothing will happen until my compensation is paid, so I'll have plenty of time. I don't know how much! Look it up. About ten and a half.
