Frame Cracks - Preventative Bracing / Patching

  1. Funny, thats what I was thinking too...........I even went outside to have a look at my mowers........

  2. Another victim of SS frame cracks here :( - Had a real close look at mine after a ride out at the weekend '97 900 @ 22K - Almost imperceptible cracks only just visible propagating from the ends of the weld on the tank clip mounting which is acting as the stress raiser. I will try and get a picture as it's really early stages it may be a good visual tool for others to compare with. The way it is cracking I don't see any cross bracing across the top of the frame helping much as I suspect its caused purely by the vertical movement of the headstock. Hard shock settings heavy riders / pillion riding are probably what bring on the cracks faster than anything else. I think the best fix would be the "X" fix mentioned above by 470 four which is what I will do - "eventually" dont use the bike enough and too many other projects on currently - For the moment I will stick a 2mm drill hole at the end of each crack and monitor for the rest of the season.

  3. A bit of old tin and a couple of pop rivets ought to do the trick....

  4. That's for fuel tank repairs not cracked frames. Cracked frames need P40 and gaffer tape or have I got them mixed up again!?

  5. Yet to get this welded on... early photo of my infamous "Space Invader" plate - allows removal of the tank clamp thingy & also svelte enough to allow airbox removal.

Now the house move is done I'd better add this to my to-do list!

  6. Imola, what's the black casing that looks like a water pump, doing on the casing of a Air cooled engine...am I missing something?

  7. ST2 engine-watercooler(radiator) instead of oil-cooler? ;-)

  8. Interesting...Why?

  9. ST2 engine it is :upyeah:

  10. ST2 is 944cc straight out of the box, also I think different cam timing?

  11. While looking for a SS 900 engine a came across this ST2 engine for a bargain price (the cams are worth more than what i paid for the engine)
It now has je hc pistons and ported heads.
It looks just like the aircooled engines but will not suffer the dreaded power loss the tuned aircooled models suffer.
With the full fairing fitted most of the hoses etc are hidden.

  12. Cheers Imola, It looks very well, was not sure if it was a complete engine swap or something different as mentioned above.
I'm sure it goes like a train.
