Pitch is not the width of the chain. A 520 chain, 525 AND 530 chain ALL HAVE THE SAME PITCH. Pitch on a chain is no different than pitch on a gear or pitch on a screw; It is the distance from tooth to tooth. When you see a chain number, like 530, the first number is the chains pitch in 1/8's of an inch. A 530 chain is five 1/8's or 5/8(.625") from pin-to-pin. A bicycle chain, which is a 4** chain, is 4/8 or 1/2(.500"). Go-karts typically use a 3** series chain. The difference between a 520 chain and a 530 chain is its width. A 520 chain has narrower rollers and thus smaller distance between plates. This is why you can't put a 520 chain on your 530 bike without changing sprockets, it simply won't fit over the teeth. Unfortunately the width of a chain doesn't have a real standard but some chains still follow the 1/8" rule for the next two numbers. A 530 chain would be a 5/8 pitch and a 3/8 roller width. A 525 is a 5/8 pitch and 2.5/8 or 5/16 width and the 520 is 5/8 pitch and 2/8 or 1/4 width. The oddball 532 chain doesn't follow this rule. This is a 530 chain but actually uses a roller with a larger diameter.
Thanks for that useful post Hal.....I don't know why I keep making use of the word 'pitch'! Chain Pitch Width Roller Diameter 415 12.70mm 4.88mm 7.75mm 420 12.70mm 6.35mm 7.75mm 428 12.70mm 7.75mm 8.51mm 520 15.88mm 6.35mm 10.16mm 525 15.88mm 7.85mm 10.16mm 530 15.88mm 9.53mm 10.16mm 532 15.88mm 9.53mm 11.10mm 630 19.05mm 9.53mm 11.91mm 632 19.05mm 9.66mm 12.68mm Doh!..........£114 rrp from Conquest carbon (Steve may be able to give a discount) Ah, an assumption on my part, the docs with my sprocket quoted a value of €70.....I see now this is obviously not the retail price now that I've followed your previous link. Edit: Direct from Supersprox (EU or USA depending where you are) may be cheaper.
Drop me an email so I don't forget and I'll get back to you with a couple of contact email addresses ;-)
My chain has finally thrown the towel in and gone very slack so time to change. Now I know this has been well covered and I was hoping to follow AndyW's excellent combination but there are no 42 tooth sprockets listed to buy from Supersprox and they have not replied to my request. So two questions: Any there any other good sources for a suitable 42 tooth std fit sprocket? Is the 108 link chain the right one and not too tight? Many thanks
Sorry to revive an old thread, but what sprocket carrier is that? I'm hoping to duplicate the exact look below. Thanks
Freshage - Suggest you speak to AndyW as that was the original VERY clean one that is now replaced by black as above! Get the metal polish out
Oddly, I'm not a fan of the black carrier flange. And I've learnt that the sprocket mentioned in the post I quoted has the carrier built into it. So no need for a separate carrier (mentioned on Andy's site).
Well that didn't go too well! Ordered Supersprox rear 42T sprocket from EU eshop (front sprocket unavailable) and got a message after completing that the payment hadn't gone through. Website message to refresh which I did and then had to place order again (no confirmation in my email). Then later in the evening received two confirmations and two Paypal payment advice - DOH! If anyone needs one I may have a spare coming No response to my email advising problem and instructing to cancel one order. Then on to the USA site (unavailable at EU shop) for the front sprocket but I'm not going to pay $45 shipping ....so may have to buy alternative (Ducati part?)
If you have gone for the rear sprocket in quoted here: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f6/alternative-530-pitch-rear-sprockets-mts1200-457/index3.html#post258940 Then if you can't cancel it in time and end up getting jipp. I will take it off your hands. Won't be until late December though 42T is the OE size right? And it's in 530 pitch and black?
Calsport carry the Supersprox in 40 and 42 variants. https://calsport.co.uk/products/cat...nd-sprockets/super-sprox-sprockets/737-530-40
Freshage, Check the original post by AndyW as he goes into a great level of detail on gearing. The 42T is a 5% change that will be ideal as I always find 6th too tall even when touring and the 5% change will help low speed town & traffic and make it even nippier  Otherwise it's black 530 so I will post if I end up with a spare. Psy69, Good site I would have used them if I'd known rather than the Supersprox EU & USA sites. Pity they don't sell the front sprocket though? Maybe I'll call them to see if they can supply. I notice they don't sell my preferred chain though: DID 530ZVMX-110 link Anyone know a good supplier as otherwise it will be Ebay.
Hi Kirky, got my DID chain from M&P thru EBay recently, same spec as yours for £119 and free delivery. I have not seem them come back on there at that price but maybe e-mail them and see if they would do a deal for you.
