999 Gps Mounting - Where And How: Any Thoughts?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by mileypau, Dec 8, 2014.

  1. In the car I think mine lasts about two hours,,,, but also require facilities for dash cam ( which has no battery power ) mobile phone charge etc etc
( I would have thot if someone knows where then it should be easy enough to disclose where the Optimate addons etc can be found  , surely it is no big secret )

  2. Apologies TTonup was convinced you were at the wind up. Would have thought that someone who has joined a forum would be able to put a search into ebay for optimate accessories. Try this;

TM68 OptiMate 12V Weatherproof Motorcycle Accessory Socket cigarette lighter | eBay

p.s. still not convinced you're not taking the piss.

  3. not a wind up.

I wasn't sure how to mount one...got some good tips now. I then posed th equestion ref cigarette lighter sockets. it seems there's an intermediate connection we dont need. all the GPS units seem to come with a lead ending in a male USB. In car these get plugged into a USB/LIghter adaptor, that then goes into the lighter socket. Given I dont need a lighter socket, why not just run a lead off th ebattery to a USB female socket?

I wasnt sure if this was OK to do, whether voltage/current is right and if it would drain the battery. Think I got the answer above to not do that as it would drain the battery.

I also have an optimate flyng lead off the battery and plug the trickle charger in when in the garage. Hadnt thought of using that same socket to power the GPS ..if possible I'd go that route as it cuts down on extra wiring.

I'm not an iPhone or Bluetooth user - plus have some fitted earplugs - not sure the spoken directions route works. Equally could mount a phone and power off the same USB set up.

Battery life for GPS units can be a couple of hours - but generally I need the GPS to get back home again, so out of life at the end of a ride is a pain. I do do some longer stuff. 300 miles in a day gets me from Lincolnshire for a decent tour of the twisty bits of North of England or over to Wales. Did 3500 miles around GB a couple of years ago - from Lands End to John O'Groats and all in between. All the routes were downloaded to a GPS (I borrowed a TomTom Rider - bit clunky but worked OK).

Lastly the car GPS untis I have flag up all the static cameras.....I know most are forward facing, but no harm in knowing hwere they are. Not that I would exceed the speed limit officer !

You can see I have some tidying up of the 'dash board' to do with some reservoir brackets, so thinking ahead on this one to do a neat job.

  4. brilliant...that's the badger

    Sorted.

    Big thanks

  5. I know not everyone has the material/machinery/ability but I make all my own mounts . This one is for my garmin zumo. I didn't want it turning with the bars so I mounted it to the key cover bracket . All made from Ti and has done many EU trips ..

  6. maybe you can post another photo to contradict me but it looks a bit bulky to me.

  7. Its not always about size . Sometimes its about position . Specially when touring with tank bag on .

  10. yep,, that's nice size..

  11. which GPS and how do you power it ?

  12. Brilliant work.
Does it vibrate with the sat-nav being so far from the mounting bolts? I never would have though the key cover holes would be strong enough. If you don`t use a tankbag, I suppose you could shorten the bracket a little bit, although, that would move the screen further back from your eyeline. Your solution is probably the best one. Does it block the view of the speedo?
Any measurements or more pics would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

  13. tidy up reservoir brackets and sat nav mount done...now need to buy the sat nav haha 2015-04-04 16.37.17.jpg 2015-03-28 17.16.21.jpg 2015-04-04 16.34.18.jpg

  14. I'LL get you a picture with a measurement reference at the week end . There is no noticable vibration but if you look at my first picture you will see there is a top and bottom part held apart by small rubber shock mounts . Bought from ebay if i remember right.

  15. Thanks for that.
I also noticed, after I`d posted of course, some triangular pieces underneath to prevent any flex.

  16. fitted my sat nav recently,, nothing fancy but cheap and working well ,, connected to Ultimate tail and throo Halfrauds multi cigar lighter
