Factory Racing 748

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Android853sp, Mar 21, 2014.

  1. There is a lot of engineering in that build and a lot to be proud of. Late last night I had a look at some 748R Pankl rods and there is no oil way through the length of the rod. There is however a hole in the top of the rod so I need to look at a piston to see if the oil ring groove has holes in it which would provide a pathway for oil. Andy

  2. Oil is fed to the small end via the oil hole at the top of the rod by oil splash and spit holes from above the main bearing sleeves on the cases. The holes on the inside of the piston feed oil outwards to the control ring, then to the piston skirt, not the other way round.

  3. Just to future proof myself guys, I was wondering where you scourced your bolts from for the RS rods. And if you are sticking to the use twice and throw away rule. Cheers

  4. I have recently made a contact at Pankl UK who is prepared for me to deal directly through them instead of a stockist, unlike Pankl Italy who ignored my request for information. I have identified the stock number for the M9 996RS bolts and currently working on identifying the stock number for the M10 748RS bolts. I don't know how many times I am going to be able to use my contact but I hope having established the relationship, it will be with Pankl and not the man. Not entirely sure where the 2 times and chuck rule originated because the modern guidance is based on bolt extension. I know bolts have been reused up to 4 times without failure in race engines. Go figure that ! I am fortunate that my current project has new rods and I have found 3 brand new early Pankl rods with bolts in the boxes of spares I bought earlier this year :). As the unit cost of bolts decreases with an increase of units, it might be viable to combine an order and save over the main dealer list price. As some of the bolts are no longer stocked by Ducati, I don't feel as though I would be doing them out of business. Andy

  5. Cheers for your reply, might be interested in a set for 996RS rods if you are ordering in the future.
Another question I forgot to ask .... any good suppliers for RS shells ❓

  6. Got mine through my preferred Ducati dealer for a "reasonable" price. Journal size is common across cranks but the RS shells have a locator to match the slot in the rods. Currently got 4 pairs of used 996RS rods in for crack detection and metrology, all with usable bolts. If they get a clean bill of health, they will be for sale should you be interested. Andy

  7. Cheers, already have a set of rods in use in the engine with a spare set hanging around. I'm not sure about the bolts in either set, and had trouble getting new shells at a reasonable price when I built my engine up. Scourced them in them in the USA eventually.

  8. Yes and the rods come in size A or B, just in case you weren't already confused. Andy

  9. 853RS transplant complete and a couple of pictures added to the album. I'm told it fired up first push of the button and sounds the business. Throttle body balance and O2 to sort once the PC3 is adjusted for the new eprom then on to the dyno to be run in and tuned probably not until the new year now but I'm content. Andy

Were you involved in the engine build? I can see the Ducati logos in the background of your pics..
What's the blue cylinder thing the gear wheels are sitting in ? Some kind of bead blaster?

Beautiful work mate.. A man of my own heart.. I could have a panni or similar but still, so adore everything about the 748/916 range.. Beautiful..

  13. If you remember we met at Moto Rapido several months ago. Yes been involved watching Baz build the new engine although I assembled the rolling chassis. The bin is for "rumbling" the gears with ceramic beads to smooth off all the sharp edges. I'm told it makes a huge difference. Andy

  14. Oh yes... Ha nice to speak to you again mte.. My boy is settled in Whinchester now so next time I visit I will try to meet up with you.. Give us a clue to your engine rebuild cost then? I guess you got a discount! Need to get my 796 engine rebuilt soon...

  15. Where are you planning to get the mag swinger?

  16. No bill yet but MR do a winter discount on labour which from memory is 20%. My ex Stuart Easton 748RS engine was completely stripped and rebuilt with an eye for detail, real old school, so I don't expect it to be cheap. Andy

  17. I've a contact in Italy who has worked both for Ducati many years ago and who now sets up suspension etc for Euro race teams.. He's got a pair to choose from I'm just waiting until he comes to the UK ..

  18. Just had a text from Wilf, the 853 has been run in and the PC III tweaked. Need to look at the print out but peak power is 132 hp and torque is just shy of 70 lbft ............ wahoo ! Andy

  19. What would the pre build figures have been for the original 748? Not Stuart Eastons but yours..
I spoke to Stuart in the workshop at Rapidos yesterday.. There's no big bore kit for mine so I'm told... Shame.. X
