749 Whats Your Winter Jobs?

  1. A doddle. Don't be afraid, after you change them you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about.

  2. Change to a mono seat from bip but keeping the bip subframe so that I can use my panniers that fit on to the the passenger footpeg mounts, plenty of cutting and a little bit of welding so the seat unit fits or should I say hope it does. Then usual fluids and stuff
Hope it doesn't end in tears or a mono subframe as I don't want to loose the panniers for my summer trips to Italy

  3. image.jpeg Still wondering what to do with the Magnesium wheels on my 749. Previously had an Sc 1000s and was never really that comfortable with the spoked wheels on it, what with the risk of rapid deflation and all that entails.
Thought that having Mag wheels would give more peace of mind, only to find out that they are susceptible to corrosion and hence risk of collapse!
Saw this Pantah in town the other day with what looked like Quite well corroded mag wheels? Obviously can't bother him too much, but what's the consensus?
Bumped into one of the mechanics from Dicati Wolverhampton last year who said that the standard forged wheels on the R are a better bet than the forged Magnesium ones fitted to mine. Don't look as nice though imho.

  4. I can't help you with the question on your wheels. But looking at the Pantah, no manufacturer can have moved on so much from where they were to where they are today over the last 30 years than Ducati. Probably more like just over 20 years since the introduction of the 916.

  5. New boots, heated grips and quite possibly a full termi on my PP this winter.

  6. Belts, shim check, number board, ride the fooker, oil, filters, fork refurb, ride the fooker.

  7. Also finished the CF under-seat infills & seat pad cover. Just waiting for a few things to arrive now.

  8. Wow,7 years !!? I've just gone one year over the recommended 2 year/10000 mile period and thought that I was pushing my luck with that !
Think I would be holding my breathe and turning blue at every gear change if I push them to 7 years!
    That's got to be a record ?

  9. it was my doss-around bike years ago, ex track bike. They ain't as fragile as people make out! Not that I recommend it!
I change them every 3 years on the R, not 2 years.

  10. My bike gets coated with ACF50/spray oil, covered in a couple of sheets and left secure, but my wife ensures that I have other jobs :

As I was putting the garden furniture back into storage for the winter, I turned to her and said:

"I don't know why I bother getting this out. You never sit on it."

She said, "Ron, put your cock away and get that bench in the garage."

  11. IMHO, changing belts after 2years is a waste of a perfectly good pair of belts, so I push mine to 3 years, maybe more.
According to those that know, belts almost never just snap and if they do, it will be because the engine broke the belts, due to them being too slack and jumping a tooh or two, not the other way round. Belts can shred, then break but this will probably be because the belt was fitted on misaligned pulleys, not because the belt just shredded.
Beware of checking the belts after fitting and retensioning them. It is vital that the belts are not loose, as a loose belt can jump teeth but the in-service tension of a belt is not the same as when fitting a new belt. New tension for a 999 is 110 Hz but iirc, in-service tension is only 90 Hz.
The important thing then, is to check the belts regularly and make sure they are not too loose, showing any signs of shredding or any cracking.

  15. After the Red bull ring the 749 makes a lot more clatter from in behind clutch area of the motor, so gave me the excuse to throw in the 999s motor sitting on the bench for the last year or so, and its great to have it in! Bought some 848 showa forks will go to Ecima to decide on whether to Mupo or Ohlins cartridges, I have a very cool MUPO Evo rear shock from last years visit but dont like the look of the caps on the cartridges so much as the Ohlins, will also check out M50 calipers, with Hel lines, but the best is next week my OZ Gass RS wheels will show up, I have the same on my Panigale and liked them so much mega light etc that I decided to get a set for the 749 now 999

Swingarm replacement for heavily scratched original, timing belts check , wiring up grade, full service, paint re[airs where necessary, fork oil change, showa rear shock with correct spring for weight of rider instead of sachs original, lengthen ride height adjuster to jack bike slightly and source sticky tyres for the 2017 riding season and repaint headlamp housing.
