1991 900 Ss Restoration (slow)

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by wolfram, Jun 12, 2015.

  1. interesting stuff al as always

  2. Tank decals...

Just ordered a set from the image works - they said i would need an 'Agip formula moto' and a 'made in italy' for the top of the tank. This s interesting, as my red 1991 tank has the 'Agip' sticker only and the black 1992 tank has only the 'Made in italy'.

Who has these stickers? (ignore the tank protector - i'm not a fan!)

    a) both
    b) made in italy only
    c) Agip formula moto only
    d) none

Black tank being sprayed next week

  4. 1991. Neither and I think the paintwork is original

  5. 1997 Wide breather (which I assume is 'large') and the Agip Formula Moto arrowy thing plus a small rectangular gold outline, gold script 'Made In Italy'.

I believe the tank is newer than the bike, could be wrong though.

  6. 1996 large breather - "Made in Italy" only.

  7. this vid has both and its a 1992

this is a 1993 with both

  8. Go on................be a devil and stick both on...........

  11. 1995 900. Made in Italy only. I've had the holes in the bottom plated and full respray but the decals are as per original.

  12. Mines a 95 with the "Made in Italy" plus the AGIP, but the AGIP is a later addition as its not lacquered in.

  13. As with a lot of stuff, Ducati were not consistent but I've never seen an original that has the AGIP sticker under the lacquer and never seen a made in italy sticker that's not under the lacquer. I don't think the AGIP stickers were universal, maybe just for some markets, some also had them on the fairings from new..
    Or something! :)

  14. OK, been using my tumbler to clean up the rusty fasteners. Its doing an OK job. I loaded it with small gravel from a fish tank supplier, added some water and some aluminium wheel cleaner spray. Results are quite good (after about 5 hours).

I have also knocked out the headstock bearings - I had left them in for the powdercoating of the frame - came out easily, phew! New ones on order.

Have taken the Showa rear shock to bits. The spring is going to powder coating.

I would like to be able to change the oil - anyone know how?

Cleaned up the brakes as well...

  15. I have also been doing some research on frame numbers - mainly based on Falloon's books.

I have estimated the total number of supersports and derivatives...

and these are the supersport only, by year...

And the same for the superlight...

For our US friends, here are the sport production and cafe racer numbers...

These are the best numbers I can get - unless you know different (in which case, let me know)

  17. There is compressed nitrogen IIRC in that reservoir..........get a specialist to do the rear shock...........chances are the seals have had it.

  18. Maxton did mine - they did gas and oil but IIRC they said replacement seals weren't available.

  19. Sounds like an excuse to buy a new shock ;)

  20. Seals are available for the Showa.............I bought a shock but the seals were knackered........ a local guy repaired it and I believe he got the seals from K-Tech.
