Yeah. No reason for the previous owner to lie (I bought it at an insurance auction). BUT. Other parts were missing as well. I'm thinking the place insurance took it, took parts off and maybe swapped some. The brake side clip on was busted, but the master was missing..line was still intact just the master. One of the coils was missing as well, and now the clutch..damnit! I just dropped a bunch on the damn triple too...oh well...racing is fun right?!
Often this breakers do lie, it's true. But often the uninitiated see a shinny clutch plate and leap to the wrong conclusions.
That's the sort of wear I'd expect from an alloy basket and clutch centre using steel friction plates .............. or a lot of miles. Andy
Check the length of your clutch springs, they could be wrong length. That would tie in with the clutch possibly being swapped for a older non slipper unit.
Owner and dealer told me new clutch was installed a year ago. Looks like it got swapped somewhere. Shit luck but what can ya do. Hunting around for a used slipper now. Bad timing with all the money I've already thrown at it. Would have been good to have known before the season started so I could've been on the hunt.
Played around a bit last night. Yep clutch is fishy for sure. I took everything out and just to check the master, reinserted the plate and pin and held in while I checked the master. Everything moved as it should and lever play is what I would expect. Put it all back together and the clutch play was lost. I'm thinking the plate doesnt align properly or the pin is too short when married with the stock hub. I'm on the hunt for a used slipper anyway but its good to make sure nothing else is wrong. Decided to fire the girl up for a bit to see if any other alarms go up. Battery is crap (yippee) Had it on the trickle charger all winter but guess its just time for a new one. Got her fired up. mmmmmm that 70mm exhaust sounds good!! Was getting some error codes but I'm thinking the battery and the fact I've made some changes without doing resets might be in play. Will try to remap the ecu if I get a chance on the weekend. Lucky for me the wife has me doing her brakes and family time on the weekend..Hope I get the chance.
Well...waiting for a clutch now..so figured i'd do something fun and might as well get something done instead of waiting around. Fitting the bodywork on. Plan is to keep it black and white for now. I will probably add a white block to the main body with stripes. I wanted to get it on the bike first before I make up my mind.
Not a lot of updates but heres where I am. Finally got the JPDiag hooked up on the bike (I plan on loading a new map for the 70mm exhaust, and activating the quickshifter). Got my map saved and waiting to the writer license so I can start to modify the map. I've got a DP slipper clutch on the way. Hoping to have it in a couple of days. It'll be nice to get the bike off the lift and actually moving. I did run into an issue though. While running the bike thru an error code for the front injector. I pulled, tested, cleaned and swapped the relays hoping that was it but nothing comes easy it seems. I'm getting a low rpm 'lag' for better word. Upper rpms seem to be fine. I'm not sure if its related to the exhaust change or the injector error. So I'm going to wait until I load the new map then I'll start working the injector issue. Baby steps!
Injector issue resolved! I'm a twat and forgot to plug one of the plugs in when I was replacing the tank. Alls good now!
New slipper installed last night. Let me just mention, the degree of dread when one of the ball bearings drops out, plunks on the floor and vanishes in the mess of the garage, is quite horrible! Installed it all last night and the clutch play feels like its fixed. Everything seems fine, but I can't run thru the gears on the paddock stand. Pulled the wheels to get some new slicks installed. If all goes well, might give her a quick spin around the block on the weekend to see if anything is acting up
Got away from the family for a few hours on the weekend. Finished installing the clutch, installed a nice new set of sticky NTEC Dunlop slicks. Got everything buttoned up and took her for a couple spins around the block. WOOHOO. Slipper seemed to work fine and the quickshifter as well. Not much of a test on my street but enough to let me feel the damn power! Spent last night safety wiring. Hope to drain the coolant and fill with water wetter. Then drill and safety wire the coolant drain nut and I think I might be able to try to install the bodywork! Next round of racings is on Saturday with a test day on Friday. Pressure is on!
Found 3 more bolts I forgot to drill, and had to drill and wire the hose clamps. Drained the coolant from the winter and flushed the system a couple times. Refilled with waterwetter. Top portion of body is almost on, two more bolts and that'll be done. Tonight is tps reset, remove side stand, install belly and I should be ready...eek! I bought a kit for a folding trailer. I might get brave and try to build it. Otherwise I'll use my truck hitch carrier to bring the bike to the track. Friday test day, Saturday qualifier and Sunday race if all goes well!!
Packed up and getting ready to head to the track for a test day. If all goes well I'll race twins on the weekend as well as endurance on the gsxr600. Fingers crossed
Was on vacation right after my last race so haven't had any time to update. Friday (July 22) was a track day (its pretty much all racers getting ready for the weekend races). Took the bike out in the slow group. I knew I'd be a big suck on it until I got some comfort that the brakes worked, shifting worked, nothing caught fire..you know..the basics. Zipped out and tried the quickshifter first. I must have messed up every shift for the first lap. Either letting off the throttle or actually using the clutch. When I did do it right..wow..Loved it! Next was a hard downshift at the end of a straight...slipped worked perfect! Did a couple laps and came back in. Took the pan off and checked for leaks...missing parts...anything out of the ordinary. Happily everything looked good. Went out for another session with the slow group...big mistake. The bike had by this point talked me into upping my pace. I was ripping past the slower bikes and getting caught up in large packs of slow riders. Came off..waited a bit for the track to open up and went back out. The bike was behaving perfect. Front tire likes to stay off the ground, but its forcing me to be a bit more smooth on the throttle. Next round I went back up into the racer group and had a teammate following me around with a camera. First turn I had opened up a pretty good gap...by the straight I was out of view. The bike is stupid fast but doesn't feel it at all (I was maybe 70% on the straight and easily hit 230kph, during our endurance race on a gsxr600 I was full out to hit the same speed and it felt fast on the gsxr). After a couple of great laps, I hit the end of the straight and the bike started acting insane on me. Only way to describe it would be to say it felt like it was randomly changing gears. Even my gear indicator was showing different gears. RPM would be all over the place an I'd either be bogging or racing the tach. I managed to get back to the pits and shut her down. Weather was 40 C out so a break was in order. Took the pan off and started hunting around. First thought was the QS was acting up. Checked wiring and connector..everything looked okay. Went and checked the clutch and uhoh...all the springs in the pressure plate had backed right off. I torqued them on (5ft/lb) but it seemed way tighter (very little movement with the pressure plate). I didn't have the tools with me to tear apart the clutch so I decided to play it safe and wait until after the races to take it apart and check it all out. Overall very happy with the bike and not a bad run for a test day. The rest of the weekend was spend on our endurance bike (gsxr600). Weather was CRAZY hot. 40 Celsius most of the day. We hid in the shade as best we could. Race went really well for our team. Pit stops were as smooth as we have been all year. We ended up finishing in 3rd place. After a 3 hour race we were 45 seconds behind 2nd place. I'm planning on hitting the track on Aug 9th for a track day if I can get the clutch figured out. I'd like to be able to get a couple race rounds in on the Duc this year! Here's the post race burnouts
Great result! Shame about the clutch though, fingers crossed it's something small and you'll be able to fix it.
Sunday night, had the clutch out. Replaced the main seal in the main shaft. Checked and cleaned plates, put on a new pressure plate, changed o rings. got it together by around 11pm. Monday, went home and lunch. Took the bike around the block...everything seemed good. Packed up the bike and gear and headed out for a Tuesday trackday. Tuesday. Not a lot of people in the expert group..thankfully! I went out a bit slow first session..everything seemed good. Shifting is bad though. Quickshifter seems to work sometimes, no others. Shifting is very strange with this bike and setup. Anyway. As the day went on, I picked up the pace. The 1198 is stupid fast and stupid torquey (is that a word). I found I have a big issue though. I can't crack the throttle hard. If I do the front wheel goes skyward and I have to fight to get it back down. I tore thru a dogleg turn and on the exit of the dogleg my front was off the ground...not a good feeling. Luckily I was exiting the turn and the bike was on its way up before the wheel lifted. I also found that the back tire will still wiggle quite a bit when I'm doing hard downshifts. Doesnt bother me, I'm quite used to it from the other bikes i race but was expecting less with the slipper. I'm wondering if I might have messed something up with it. Will tear it apart again this week and check it out. All in all that bike is crazy fun, crazy fast. On corners I would have a knee down for parts of, I would be knee down thru the entire turn. Throttle is so smooth and with the torque very easy in corners. Hard throttle will have to be worked on though. I come out of corners and I can't go more than 1/2 throttle until the rpms are up, before I can really crack it. Lots and lots more speed and time to get once I learn to exit with more throttle! Have some video from the sidelines I'll try to post up. Nothing pretty but its a nice sound with the twin and 70mm exhaust!
