939 SP Good Buy Or Goodbye? Warming, But Still Not Sure

  3. I think the write up on the bike is very fair .... good points bad points ,warts and all .... I like the honesty .
    See ,thing is sometimes with folk if they buy such and such a bike and spend a lot of dosh .... well it's like a bit of an embarrassment to say it has a few niggles or they preferred the previous model because such and such was better .
    I've had a few ktms now , went out bought brand new Ktm 1290 super adventure (£16k ..... 1000 miles later sold it , lost a lump of dosh ..... shit happens man!
    The part where you say it feels lofty and floaty I thought excatly that when I changed from the 1100 S to the 1100 SP ..... it's like being on a motoX with the long travel , high off the ground feeling but when you get used to it you forget about it , at the time I still had the 1100s if I took that out it felt crashy in comparison .
    I really like the 1100sp but I think what would I like to replace it with in years to come , I would certainly look at the 939 sp , I need to get a ride on one and see for myself , anyone in north west got one ??

  4. Hi all - Im new to the forum and new to Ducatis.
    Ive bought a new Hypermotard 939SP, had it now just over 2 weeks and like Desmo, I too aren't really getting good feelings from initial ownership.

    Ill shortly be approaching the first service.
    So far things to note are:

    Poor low speed fueling/snatchy throttle - cut out on me a couple of times. Having to use a lot of clutch to keep her running at slow speeds.

    Neutral must have been omitted on my bike. I think Ive managed to find it twice - the rest of the times, the clutch has been my best friend.

    Had her on the motorway and theres a definite head shake when pushing on, but then probably to be expected from this style of bike.

    The front brake reservoir vibrates and shakes like crazy - not good for a 12.5K bike - Ive had cheap chinese with better.

    FBW throttle - really not liking it. As Desmo reports, it feels disconnected - stretched, much prefer cable approach.

    Lastly, there seems to be lots of false neutrals - particularly between 5 & 6th gear.

    In all honestly, Im quite disappointed - I expected better. I had a new Triumph Street Triple R a couple of years back - that was no where near the price of this bike yet compared to the 939SP, felt like a million dollars.

    Im beginning to wonder if Ive made a huge mistake.
    I test rode a Ducati Scrambler a month before buying the 939 and walked away with the biggest grin. Im speaking to the dealer to see if we can work something out....

    Can anyone convince me that the 939 will get better, thats its just a Ducati thing I need to adapt to and everything will be ok?
    Will it get better after the 1st service?

    Desmoaddict - any words of wisdom? What made you change your mind?

  5. Well I'm 1800 miles in now, and love it.

    I ride hard and fast, I embrace the head shakes and love the lack of neutral.

    WHY?

    Because it looks amazing, turns heads, attracts lots of attention, and is amazing fun to ride.

    I hound every other bike I encounter, demonstrating my adept skill at wheelying and carving them up with knee on floor. Usually results in a thumbs up or a head shake, either way it makes the 'hooligan' image look just right.

    This is the kind of bike that you have to grab by the scruff of the neck and ride it.

    It's not for inexperienced riders in my opinion.

  7. Not at all. It's great at cruising too. I just did a 700 mile trip over 40 hours and it was perfectly suited.

    Below 4K it can get a bit snatchy, but that's the same with most ducati's.

    Try riding a 1299 or 1098, they're awful at low rpm.

  8. Yeah they do like a bit of a head shake don't they ......its just the whole style of the bike I think .

    Some of the new generation bikes have terrible fueling maps due to ever increasing cleaner running emission control .
    A few mods air box / can ,and a good bespoke map would transform it I reckon
     
  9. Yeah, I've read Ducatis in general are snatchy at low throttle. Maybe it's something that improves with miles. I've only done 500!

  11. Don't get me wrong, love the looks, power, sound etc.
    I really want it to be everything I expect but just not feeling it yet.
    Don't know whether I'm just being a bit impatient?

  12. Yeah I think so. It'll take a good 1200 miles to get in to it I'd say.

    Once it's run in, and you can fit a nice exhaust you'll fall in love.

    If the head shake bothers you then add an ohlins steering damper. Not cheap, but nothing is for these bikes.

    Alternatively get the suspension setup for your weight and riding style and it'll all become perfect. Ohlins is hard out of the box, so not ideal for the shake issue.
     
  13. Yeah, was lookin at the Ohlins damper. If I keep, this might be one for Santa to look into.
    Dealership advised me to not fit non Ducati approved can. I was looking at the Akrapovic & link pipe but Dealership said it would affect warranty.

  14. I would still say get it correctly dyno'd and then flashed....if your dyno guy near you reflashes the ecu - theres no reason he shouldn't be able to flash it back...problem solved if theres a warranty issue.
     
  15. I think you probably need a go on a dyno'd ducati to know what can be done to yours to correct it....mine used to be the same way at low throttle, snatchy, always up and down the gears and dipping the clutch - all gone with the dyno work.
     
  16. Surely the Ducati dealership could do this at first service if I explain the issues? Or aren't they allowed to deviate from protocol, as so to speak?

  17. I have the 821 but the false neutral between 5 & 6th bit me constantly when I first got the bike. My previous bikes (2 sv650s) had no such thing. I've learned that these bikes (all ducatis) require a "firm" shift which means commit to the shift and hold it. Problem is gone.

    The ride by wire is superior in my opinion but the disconnected feeling is definitely strange at first. The benefit is the electronics that *will* save your ass in certain circumstances and overall can lead to a very smooth ride once you get used to it.

Welcome to the world of eu regulation....Ducati have to sell it that way to you....they have to make it euro compliant....cjs (for example who are close to me in Bristol will map it correctly) Delete the flapper valve, remove the o2 sensors, reduce the engine braking, add 500rpm to the redline. Heres the dyno run from my second hyper....

    Notice the bottom end....that there is your throttle snatchiness - and then take a look after....a smooth curve....heres another one...our smax....same thing applies...

    An absolute torque monster now in second...uses less fuel, egr valve closed...so doesn't clog the engine up and it just sailed through the mot - emissions nice and low...I made a point of asking the MOT bloke.

    Dyno work is the way to go without a doubt...Notice the power increase on both....
     
  19. just to add I get the false neutral also (and have had on all 3 of my hypers) just have to be a bit more manly with the gear change...
     
  20. I'm thinking as you say, and others have touched upon, that it maybe that Ducatis are unlike any other manufacturer and it's probably a period of adjustment that I need to allow myself to connect with the bike and the electronics.
    As I said in my first post, the street triple was faultless, so I'm always gonna be comparing. Plus the higher price of the 939 led me to believe a far more superior package was being purchased.

    Anyway, the jury is still out - your responses have given me a bit more optimism, so maybe things aren't all that bad.
