I have a 1198s with just under 11k miles on it. Had it up for sale, changed my mind and a couple of weeks ago the engine went. Just had the bad news that it's the shell bearings on the crank that have gone! So what to do? Ideally I'd like to sell it as whole and hopefully someone who knows what they are doing can rebuild it and keep it on the road, or track. What's it worth in that condition??? Offers??? The other option is to break it up. Never done it and it sort goes against the grain as would be a shame to have such a great bike not turn another wheel, but it's got to be an option and any ideas on how much I'd get for most of the major bits? Anyone else had to go down the same route? Advise welcome!!!!
Sorry to hear that, bad luck. Is having it repaired not an option? It may seem expensive, but selling it as a non runner will massively affect it's value. Breaking for parts may not return anywhere near the value of the bike if it's main component is broken and you'll probably end up with a load of parts you can't shift after the nice stuff has gone.
I I've been quoted £1900 for a new crank, £900 per con rod and 20 hours labour for the engine rebuild! Never mind if anything else is wrong with it after they get the engine fully to bits. With all the other bits like gaskets, lubricants etc it's just uneconomical in my eyes. I agree that it'll take some time to shift most of the bits but I think it'd be the most cost effective way of getting some money back in the long run, even if I do end up with lots of bits left?
fix it would be the best bet, ive broken a bike and though its good money its a ball ache!! fix it then sell it.
At the prices I've been quoted I'd only get £2500 at the most after paying for it to be fixed. Unless someone tells me different or there is a engine for sale elsewhere?
below is the original advert I put up when it was for sale a short time ago. I'd decided to keep it but after another 100 miles the engine went. http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/ducati-1198s-2009-£8200-ovno.44943/#post-795305 Neil at Cornerspeed has told me that they've had the sump off and there are bits of shell bearings in it. So it's up for offers!! I've done a quick tot up of how much the major parts are worth but I'd rather sell it to someone who will put it back on the road or use it as a winter project.
They do pop up occasionally on eBay, if you can find a reputable seller. I suppose it depends on how long you want to hang on. The only ones I can see at the moment are in the US. Ducati 1198 2010 Engine Motor & Components Only 3K Miles! Video! Guaranteed! | eBay
Funnily enough my brother lives in Colarado about 50 miles from Denver. Not sure about spending thousands on an engine from someone I can't meet or see where they are. Might be an option though I'd prefer someone in the uk. (If I could find one!)
I'm not sure what it's worth as it is so open to offers. I'd be wanting to get £5k for it minimum but then again as Mick Jagger says " you can't always get what you want!"
Tough break and tough call. The big bits will go first and then you'll be flogging the rest forever. Rebuild is a waste. You don't want to keep the bike anyway and you'll never make the money back. If you can find a wrecked bike locally and get the motor (and can do the swap) it would probably be the best route. Stripping it down and selling the pricing bits is easy enough but the rest will sit around, unless you throw it in a box and take it to a local shop and try to get something for it.
Totally agree. It might be worth me holding onto it and waiting for an engine to come up locally. Biking season is just about over and I'm in no rush to get rid and be even more out of pocket!
Gives you all winter to remove the motor and find another used on. Bonus, you can strip any of the good parts and get a little cash as well!
