@Exige starter cable upgrade is well worth the ££££££££, which may help the starting. New plugs + TPS reset.
Seen some reports on the cables, but i'd have thought they'd be more for non-cranking issues, this cranks fine and will semi-start the bike 5+ times no worries... it just then sort of dies after 10s of bum-bum-vum-burble-burble-vssssssh. New plugs and TPS reset i'll be sending back to the dealer to sort either/both of them. Couldn't do anything today as i've only just got back now and the neighbours wouldn't like me firing up the Termis now. So i'll have a go in the morning
I believe TPS is set with warm engine so is not quite right von cold starting.. that I what I was told on 999 starting.
Fired up lovely with just a touch of throttle at the right time. Couple of min at 2,000 to hold it and then idles right. The internet is full of useful information. ve not got started on the cleaning, pics and random rubbish yet. Although I have just polished the RHS fairing to see how it looks and it looks good. Does have a small scratch I'd not noticed before, but its not a new bike of course. The underneath of engine etc needs a good clean but I've got an hour of cycling to do before we get around to that stage of things.
I agree, get the throttle bodies balanced and the TPS checked, not expensive and will save u destroying the starter from having to constantly turn it over Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cleaning has begun as it's a quiet day and no plans for anything else. It's far from terrible, pretty decent really.
Mrs Weeksy decided to cook a roast, which gave me another hour of spanner time. Stripped calipers out to check pads, pistons, movement and give them a clean. Under some circumstances I'd completely stop them, but these were pretty good, pistons nice, so they were just pushed out, cleaned, turned and given red rubber grease. Everything all cleaned, grease on bolts and stuck back together Before After
Strictly come dancing, so that means garage time. Removed front mudguard and polished, obviously cleaning fork legs too. Not done brake discs yet though as still no paddock stand
I'm sure you've all seen and heard tales of woe with 1098s.. but here's another I'm now sitting wondering where to begin. There are reports of an ECU flash from CJS, there's exact start cables from Exige on here, there's valves/throttle bodies/TPS.... But as you guys see these things a lot i thought i'd ask on here. Battery will attempt to run the bike 10 times before it starts really struggling. Attempt 1 in the video was with no throttle at all. Attempt 2 was with a tiny bit (after reading wisdom on the WWW) Thoughts appreciated.
Your not supposed to keep the button pressed or use any throttle. I'd start with new spark plugs correctly gapped and clean all terminals battery, starter motor, etc, then new battery and @Exige cables, then off to CJS or similar. I think you can reset TPS yourself with a couple of cables and a tablet. "Check that the stop switch (2, fig. 52) is positioned to (RUN), then press the starter button (3, fig. 52). This model has servo-assisted starting. To use the servo- assisted starting feature, press the start button (3) and release it immediately. When you press button (3) the starter motor runs automatically for a period of time that varies according to the engine temperature. The system disengages the starter motor as soon as the engine starts. If the engine fails to start, wait at least 2 seconds before pressing the start button (3) again. Allow the engine to start on its own, without turning the throttle twistgrip."
I know you're not supposed to... but many seem to have to. We'll see what happens next.... thanks for the info.
Mine certainly doesn't start in the same way my Sport Classic did. It starts like my 848.... Well, it would start like my 848 if it would actually start... but you know what i mean
According to the manual I downloaded from Ducati last night it does. 1098/S/Tri. The R may be a different beast.
You're deffo right in that context, my manual i downloaded says that too... Still doesn't sound like my SC1000 did .... but hey ho. Onwards and upwards then....
My new to me 1098 struggled to start with the exact symptoms of yours. I fitted a new battery and now all is well. No throttle just press the starter and release and after a couple of cranks the bike fires and runs perfectly.
